Had my son out with me again tonight. Got out of the blind earlier than I normally would have but he was so bored he couldn't sit any longer. Called Dad on radio to let him know we where heading out. Dad was in the thick stuff and couldn't see anymore so he started to head out. While waiting in the field something caught my eye. A huge doe, told my son to get down, got into position to take a shot, she was facing me headon so waited for better shot, she kept walking towards me until finally she was broadside, put the crosshairs behind her shoulder and went through mental checklist. It was then I realized I'd be shooting uphill towards a road about 400 yards away. Lowered the gun and watched her bound away. She got spooked when Dad walked out of the bush. Hopefully she wasn't spooked to bad, didn't seem it she never blew and just bounced away. We're going back in the morning for the whole day maybe we'll get lucky on last day of shotgun.

TJ maybe next time. It is very good to see that there are still many people out there that think safety first over the harvesting of an animal.

Good luck tomorrow.

The deer was at 30 yards. The road was 400 yards away. Years ago I shot a doe on a drainage that went through the bush. Abuddy of mine was about 350 yards down the drainage and in the field about 50 yards off the drainage. I spined the deer and he heard the slug skipping and wining down the drainage past him. This was one of the reasons I didn't take the shot. You never know what a slug will do.

Wise move to hold the shot! The odds of doing any damage are probably about the same as winning the lottery, but I'd bet my money you'll hit someone before you collect the lottery money.
Something to do with the 50-50-90 rule I think. (if there's a 50-50 chance of getting it right, there's a 90% probability it will be wrong) I was explaining that one to a customer just yesterday as I was replacing the water control "cartridge" in his sink faucets. There is no marking on the cartridge, and reversing it 180º reverses hot & cold. Guess what I got when I turned the cold water on.

Tj, good call man you are teaching that boy of yours well, don't worry about not getting a deer there are lots of them around and lots of time to hunt, but only one chance to show Jacob what being an ethical hunter and responsable person means. Keep it up. :D

Oh, don't worry I'll only raze you a little if you get skunked :P :P
enjoy the woods

After the amount I gave you last year I deserve ever amount I get. We really didn't see much during the shotgun. Our one property we saw nothing at all. Not sure what we're going to do for the rest of the year. I'm a little burnt out though. We spent 11 days total hunting with the shotguns and only saw 5 deer! Don't know how many hours, don't think I'll go back out till next Friday just to take a break.
