I've been trying for the past few years to take a deer with my Lyman muzzleloader. This summer I drew a special Historic weapons hunt here in Misssouri, and yesterday I had a six pointer walk within 20 yds. of me. I hit him with a 54. cal roundball in front of 90 grains of ff blackpowder. It was a double lung shot. He ran 25 yds into the creek bottom and piled up. I couldn't have asked for anything better. I'll have to think about maybe going after one with a flintlock next year, but archery season opens backup this week so my mind is back on the Exocet that's hanging on the wall. It runs now till the middle of Jan. Were really lucky here to have a season that runs from Sept. 15 to Jan. except for the gun season.

Good Job tkstae,

I use the ol round ball myself. Ready for ML Season this friday, Got 3 doe tags to fill.

Shot a real nice 9 Pointer with my Shiloh Sharps 45-110 the otherday.

Sounds like the .54 did a good job an him. I've got a Lyman .50 plains pistol that is very accurate, but it's not legal for deer hunting here. Still a lot of fun to plink with. I see Lyman is now making an inline (breakaway), and I'm thinking of trying one. As for the flintlock, they can be just as good as a caplock in dry weather, but wet weather can create a few challenges.

Aren't they great! I am fortunate in belonging to a blackpowder club that has it's own range and they have 6 shoots a year. No in-lines are allowed so I use a Thompson Center Pennsylvania Match Rifle (50 cal) which has peep sights and is very accurate. LOL They only had 33 yards of space to build the range so that's it - everything is shot at 33 yards. Have great prizes. One time I won 10# of chicken all bagged up. Another time it was 5# of bacon or cans of powder or boxes of caps. Much more fun than shooting for trophys. It is just wonderful listening to the guns going off and man you talk about smoke - there's lots of it when 20 men are firing at once. I also like shooting trap with my 15 gauge. Yes it's 15 ga! The old manufacturers just made them what they came out. This is an English double that measures out to 15 ga.

I have a Thompson Encore inline which I would rather use anyday than a shotgun slug. More accurate.
