VIDEO CAMERA SCOPE MOUNT FOR CROSSBOW

Post by flbuckmaster »

DOES ANYONE HAVE A VIDEO CAMERA MOUNTED ON THEIR CROSSBOW?. I BOUGHT A HOMEMADE SCOPE MOUNTED CAMERA MOUNT ON EBAY THIS FALL FOR MY RIFLE BUT THE RECOIL SHUTS THE CAMERA DOWN. I THEN PUT IT ON MY MAXPOINT AND IT WORKS GREAT. YOU GET THE BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER SHOT ON VIDEO. IT'S REALLY COOL AND YOU DONT NEED ANYONE ELSE TO VIDEO YOUR HUNT FOR YOU. IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED I CAN POST A PIC OF THE CAMERA MOUNTED ON MY CROSSBOW. MAYBE GROUND POUNDER CAN TAKE THIS IDEA, IMPROVE IT, AND MAKE THEM AVAILABLE FOR US. JAY

Mark from here has a home brewed set up that seems to work well. I forget the name of the pieces he used.

I actually made a camera mount for my vertical bow about twelve years ago before I had ever seen one for sale. It worked, but the instant shock of the bow being fired is what I believe too hard of a jolt for camera equipment. I scrapped the idea for fear of damaging an expensive camera. Video cameras are alot cheaper now but still just as delicate. Thanks for thinking of me for design though.

ExcalBeliever done did the vedio thingy and it was really neat, however they are now gone. Maybe he can re-post them and show you what he used for a mount.

I have posted these pics before.
I took a scope ring and mounted it one my scope
with the dovetail facing up. I took a 1/4in flathead screw and locked it in the dovetail placing a nut on it for the camera to lock down on.
The nut has to be in the right position so the camera locks snug as
the lens faces the front. ( The camera has to be screwed onto the screw).
I cut a little slit in my scope cover to let the screw poke through.
I cover my camera when it is on with a face mask so just the lens pokes through, as I am usually on the ground.
Only trouble is since I have had it on(turkey & deer season this year) I
Haven't seen anything.

Isis - Very cool! So what brand/size scope ring did you use? Did you have to tap it to a different thread count to get the camera tripod threads to work with the screw? Any details are greatly appreciated.

Nevermind on the second question - figured out how you did after reading the post and looking at the pic again. Looks like it would be easy enough to setup, just wondering if my Sony Mini-DV camcorder will be too heavy for this setup. I'm a little concerned about the torque on the scope, although I've got everything locked down with loctite. How heavy is your camera and have you done much shooting with this setup?

Well, I used Isis setup and tried out the Sony camcorder on top of the scope this afternoon with two shots into my block target. Unfortunately, both shots caused the recorder to "skip" when the bow went off and I think it put too much shock on the camcorder for my comfort level. Not sure how many shots it would take to rattle the electronics in the camera beyond use. I'm thinking I'll try out the hunt cam down the road for trying to do some DIY hunt filming. Don't have the money right now, and maybe they'll come down in cost over the next year.

Another approach might be to use the quiver mount to lock onto the bow. A rubber block connecting the camera and the quiver mount might give enough vibration dampening. It would take some adjusting to have the camera point to the same direction as the arrow flies.

It would be nice to have a remote switch to fire off the camera AND the arrow simultaneously, wouldn't it?

Wish I had a video camera!! This sounds like a fine project.
