Deer done, now on to Coyotes!

Post by Bow Life »

Well thats the end of 2006, it was a good season, didnt see anything the last day but sure loved being out there. Now for me im on to coyote hunting, helping keep the population low arround here. Too many farmers are complaining about the coyotes coming right into the barns. I was wondering are there any other members here that hunt coyotes, if so what are your methods? Dogs? Walking them through? thanks, happy new year and best of luck in 07!

Hey Bow Life,

When is the coyote season in Ontario and are you allowed to hunt them with a small game license?

Bow Life,here is some info.
You need a wolf/coyote seal for WMU's 1-42,46-50,and53-58.
A seal is not required in WMU's 43-45,and 59-95.
You can apply for up to two seals,at $10 each.
I would suggest you take a look at Pages 84&85 of the 2006 Regs,as there is other information such as no party hunting, possession of pelts, etc.,that you need to know, and you must fill out a questionnaire by Jan 15th of any year that you hunt them.
The season is closed from April 1 to September 14.

I use a Dennis Kirk electronic caller with remote. It uses tapes and I probably have about 6 for yotes. My gun is a Ruger 22-250 Ackley improved sporting a Cryo'd Shilen barrel @27". The trigger breaks even at 1 3/4 pounds. 40.3 grains of Accurate 4895 powder push 40 grain Nosler Ballistic tips @ 4330 fps. The Noslers leave very little pelt damage. Only one exited and left a 4" hole. I prefer front on chest shots because they drop on the spot, because all energy is absorbed in the chest cavity. All brass have been weighed, prepped and uniformed. It shoots in the .3's and .4's if I do my part. The scope is a Leupold III 6 x 20. All sit atop a free floated/glassed and pillar bedded laminated stock. All smithing was done by George Wessinger in South Carolina. My furthest coyote was taken at a witnessed 460 yards, most have been shot at 50-200 yards. So far I have taken 11 with this setup, all one shot kills. Right now I'm looking into the newer "Foxpro" digital electronic caller with downloadable soundcards. www.gofoxpro.com One awesome caller for sure.

Are you north or south in Ont??
I've seen a FEW yotes this year, closer than any deer!!!!
I think I'll be taking it up too.

Hey guys, great response, i have a .222 mag, no body i talk has this gun most havent even herd of it. Its the same as a normal .222 but the shell is a little larger and has more powder behind it. I can not however find any shells for this gun. I was lucky enough to find 500 brand new brass so i bought them and had a friend re load them. Im in southern ontario and we do see lots of coyotes. Thanks for the info on the regulations bob, ill be sure to check that.

I'm thinking about taking it up this winter.20 years ago we use to have a group of 15-20 guys that would run them with dogs. After the decline in pelt prices every body got out of it.Its just not worth feeding a half dozen hounds anymore.A guy at work is hunting them with calls so I thought I might give that a go this winter. Its not looking like were going to get any ice for ice fishing this year   so I got to have something to do all winter  .I have a question already. Is it best to hunt them from the ground or from a treestand?

Most of the time what we do (past years) is set up two or three guys on the end of a bush and then another two guys walk the bush. You can be in a stand, it allows you to see more but i prefer being on top of a hill on the ground, your able to move and react more to whats happening. We have also tried baiting and that works well to get them in a specific area. However if there arent alot of you hunting just set up a stand near a bait site, or another highly travelled area. We hunt them for fun, its always enjoyable to just get out and go for a walk. Hope that helps.

I use a FoxPro FX5 call. Just got it this fall. It is expensive but well worth it. I also use their Jack In the Box Decoy. Since I am by no means an early morning type of person, I hunt coyotes at night. Try to set up at dusk and stay for an hour or so after dark. Use Lightforce 400,000 cp beam mounted on 17 Remington in a Thompson Contender. Also have a Lightforce second lamp 1,000,000cp which I scan with. I set the call right out in front of me and call them right into me. That way you can easily see their eyes. The lights blind them as far as seeing me is concerned. I leave the scanning light on all the time I am calling. I call about 15 to 20 minutes in each stand and then move on. I just hide in some brush where I have a clear view around me. Tree stand might work, but I a wheelchair person so that's out for me.

It is quite exciting! I've had them almost end up in my lap. Also had owls swoop down on me. Gray fox will jump right in your face. Once they hear the dinner bell there ain't no discouraging them except with a well place 17 Rem. I also use AR-15 Carbine sometimes and other times use a 10 ga Mag with #4 Buck. Generally try to have two men sitting back to back so can watch 360 degrees. One has rifle other has shotgun. That way we have all ranges covered.

Unfortunately, pelts are poor this year. Just too warm, but you guys from the far North can get $165 US out of a prime pelt. Ladies want fur coats and don't care about PETA anymore. Two years I bought my girlfriend a red fox hat off eBay for $25 For the past two winters I have been trying to get her a red fox jacket and man you can't touch them for less than $300 to $500 now. Two years ago you could get one for $100.

So anyhow fur prices are going up.... All we need is a real winter!

I used to hunt coyotes like a madman but now I have a wife and 2 kids. That wipes out alot of my time since I'm kind of a prick about my archery deer time from Oct to Dec end. They are very good about it so I can't really say I'm gonna hunt coyotes and switch directly to turkeys. I do have the stuff less the dogs for now. I shoot a sako 22-250 bull barrel with 53gr. match hollow points that I got singin around 3900fps. You guys shoot mine for me for now and keep those #s as low as possible.

I'll be out there on some winter walks with my Remington .22mag or my Remington 700 .223. I try calling them in but don't have much luck. Just nice to get out though for some fresh air and maybe get a shot at one.

Ok for any of you who truely want to learn to hunt coyotes and other predators go to www.predatormastersforums.com and learn, learn, learn... It is like this forum is to deer hunting only it is all about fox, coyote, cougar, etc. I must admit I am more of a predator hunter than a deer hunter so I spend lots of time on that forum. Bunch of good guys and some of the best predator hunters in the country on there. Also FoxPro has a predator hunting forum at http://www.gofoxpro.com/ They make the FX5 game call and JIB Decoy which are the Cadilac of game calls. Lots of experts on there. Enjoy and by all means help us control coyotes or that is all we'll have soon. By the way, prime coyote pelts are way up in price for 2007. You Northern guys can add another Excalibur to the rack if you bag a few song dogs!
