new carbon express bolts

Post by sumner4991 »

Has anyone used the new Maxima bolt from Carbon Express? It has built-in "weight forward" and can be ordered with Blazer vanes. It's not on their website, but is listed in their 2007 catalog.

I checked them out last Sat. They looked pretty cool, and they are better built carbon spiral wrapped. They were a fair bit heavier, and only came with half moon plastic nocks. I was going to get some, but I didn't want to use the nocks as is, and removing plastic nocks is a pain in the butt!
They were quite impressive though. :)
Same price as the others $8.00 each.

M&M: Carbon Express isn't made by Easton.

John: I always buy my bolts with plastic moon nocks, and just grind them flat on my grinder. The plastic nocks are lighter than the aluminum nocks, so better FOC :) Or atleast helps a bit.

Don't like the plastic moon nocks at all.
To each his own. Just not for me. Sand them flat, or grind them flat.
I won't stop anyone, or argue the point about them, to anyone, they are just not for me. :) I would rather put or have aluminium in back. There are many ways to get FOC to where you want with Aluminium, and still get a fairly light gr. bolt.
But to anyone who uses them, great! I would never discourage you. :)

checked them out this afternoon they look nice 414gr I believe is what it said on the package but the price was 60$ for a half dozen, I'm thinking at 414gr and then you put a 100-125gr broadhead on it thats a heavy arrow. M&M

I'm leaning toward a heavier bolt. Should be quieter, more energy and more accurate in hunting conditions. Also, in the higher draw weight bows, it should perform a little better . . .small loss in speed for much more energy. I'm shooting the Max and I believe the trade off from speed to energy will be a small one. Probably not worth changing my set-up . . .if I had one. I'm planning on building my own bolts for next season. The maxima with the 1.5" Blazer vanes . . .looks just like what I was looking for  . I'm waiting until all the new gear hits the street before diving in. However, I like those Carbon Express bolts, well at least on paper. Any one shoot these yet??

Yep, they are heavy, especially the price. I'm quite satisfied with my Carbon Express Crossbolts that weigh 327gr. and cost me only $29 for 6.

ComfyBear . . .if the bolt stabilizes quicker, wouldn't it be worth a look to shoot it in the Max? I'm getting great groups from the Gold Tip II . . .however, in windy conditions would a heavier bolt would be worth the extra bucks? Honestly, the few $$ isn't a issue for me. Especially since they are more durable, may be a wash in the long run. I only get to hunt a few days per year . . .certainly don't want to stay home if it's windy. Besides, with the Max, I have a few fps I could give away and still be very effective, right? Could be the difference in a clean kill and a long track.

For the Max heavy is good, and if you don't mind the extra bucks, go for it. However, I believe Beaman's are probably just as heavy, and sell at a cheaper price.

IMHO the Goldtips are too light for the Max, even though you get good groups, there's too much stress on the bow. Even with brass inserts and 100gr tips and 4" vanes, they weigh approx 416 gr. Personally I wouldn't use anything under 425gr. If you were to use 5" vanes you would add approx. an additional 12gr for 428gr, and you'd be OK.

I just checked the CX site, and it seems to me that the Maxima Hunter are full length Vert arrows. The only ones I see for crossbows are the Crossbolts.

Summer, I think you will get less wind effect with the faster bolt.

Not sure how a bolt flys but in an aircraft the size or weight made no difference on wind drift, just the speed of the aircraft and aircraft speed vx wind speed/wind direction.

Well like I said not sure about ballistics of the bolt. But I do know an F16 and a C5 will drift exactly the same degree if they are traveling in the same wx system and traveling the same speed.

It seems it would work this way on bolts also. But I could be way off. :)
