22 Hornet for Coyote

Post by Shakky »

I was thinking about doing some coyote hunting and I was wondering about the hornets range. I handload a 40gr Nosler to about 2800fps. 150 yards sound about right?

150 yards IMO would be my maximum. With a properly placed shot.

I use a 222 Rem on chucks with a maximum of 225 yards with a 50 to 55 gr bullet @ 3200 fps.

Here is a ballistic chart for the 40gr 22 Hornet spitzer @ 2800 fps. I forgot to change the zero range. I have my 222 zeroed @180 yards.

Hornet

The Hornet is one of my favorites , learned to reload with that cartridge. 200 and under is the max. for a clean kill. PM me and we will swap some thoughts on loads.

I have thought about getting a 22 hornet for coyotes/fox/fun. 150 yards is plenty far enough for me. I like getting close to what I am hunting. The hornet forces the shooter to wait for a closer shot, same reason why I like the 45-70. And of course my Exocet.

I've been looking at the model 40 Savage. Seems like decent rifle for the money.

I like the Hornet myself. However, I updated it's somewhat inefficient design to .17 Ackley Hornet, now sporting a nice 30 degree shoulder instead the old 5 degree. Now it looks like a cool mini 22-250.
Ground hogs and fox are not safe at 250 yards, 300 yard head shot plant them.
Probably 600 groudhogs, 1800 praire dogs, 18 fox, 3 yotes, 300 crows and one Fallow deer (shot in the eyeball at 75 yards...MNR permission) have fallen with this potent little shooter.
20 grain Burger bullets exit a 25" Shilen cryo'd Barrel @ 3630 fps. 11 grains of Accurate 1680 powder, ignited by CCI primers get things moving.
Built on a Ruger 77/22 by George Wessinger. Been glassed, pillar bedded and free floated. The trigger breaks like an icecicle at 1 1/2 pounds. A Leupold 4.5 x 14 opens the field of view.
This is my pet gun.
