Well spring is the best time to put it out so you should get some coming in. I use this product and I know some other forum members do as well.

Shakky got me a couple at the Newmarket Co-op. Probably just about any farmer's Co-op/supply will have them.

Mineral Lick

Post by BryanOney »

Once a year I buy 50 pound bag of water softener salt and dump it in the woods. The deer use it and dig as big of a hole as they did when I used to by the expensive mineral mixes. People used to steal salt blocks I would put out. No one will mess with all the fine grains of salt for a water softener. At 2 places where I have been putting water softener salt for 3 years there is a 3 foot wide, one foot deep hole. I no longer buy the expensive mineral mixes. Just my 2 cents.

i once herd of someone using a burlap bag, or some other bag that has the holes in it (such as a feed gain bag) and filling it with the water softener salt, and then hanging it in the tree. when it rains the water disolves the salt and the salt runs onto the ground. but i have never personally tried it so im not too sure if it works.

Idea works well!, and year round. For the off season (snow free) put some large stones under it. A UREA mix which is used in fertilizer helps to bring em in too. UREA is apparently animal urine that activates and gives off scent when its hydrated (rain). The deer will lick the stones. Don't expect immediate response, they will find it but be patient.
