paint brush beard

Post by catcher »

Got my second bird this morning. It has a really wide beard. one inch and three quarters wide at the breast. Bird weighed 21.4 pounds and 7/8 spurs. It took him one hour to come one hundred yards. He strutted all the way. The tricky part was getting the two hens he was with to come my way.The only problem was they were at 25 feet and facing me. So finally he turned away with his fan away from me. A quick alarm call on the mouth call and his head was up. Widest beard for me yet. the beard was 10 inches long.

I used to pluck them and roast them. But I was in South Carolina three weeks ago and they showed me away they do them. They breasted them out and cut them up into small chunks and coated them in flour and coating and deep fried them. And they keep the dark meat for soup. So that is what I have done with my two from this year. It was an interesting hunt in South Carolina I got two Toms. You are allowed two birds a day there and I had two come into the decoy. Shot them both One had two beards first beard was 93/4 long and the second was 71/4 long and the other bird had a 91/4 inch long beard. The two bearded turkey is in at the taxidermest now. I have a picture of them both if anybody is interested I will post. At least the picture is coming up now I just got to figure how to make it open wnen the post is opened.

Congrats on the big beard! I love the turkey bites too :D . There's just the wife and I so it seems like a lot of meat to cook up the whole bird. We cut up the breast into bite size chunks, roll in Shake N Bake, and deep fry. Dark meat goes to soups and stews.
I hunt for memories, the meat's a bonus!
