New to Crossbow hunting

Post by Sopchoppy »

With the archery season 2 months longer than gun season in Tennessee, and being retired and having lots of hunting time now, I decided to give bow hunting a shot this year. After reading reviews and forums, this one included, I decided a crossbow was the way to go. Excalibur seemed to be the best of the bunch so I ordered a Vortex w/Right Stuff and just received it a couple of hours ago. As I get into sighting in and practice, I'm sure I'll have lots of questions , some of which will be real rookie hum dingers!! Most of y'all seem eager to help those of us just getting started. so I'll be back in a couple of days with the questions. Thanks.

Welcome,

Lots of good advice on here, just ask or do a search for your question. I don't think theres much that hasn't been asked before.

It did'nt take a couple of days for questions.....here's the first ones:

1. Does it matter if you use flat or half moon nocks? The ones in the pkg.
are flat.

2. I assume I need to use the same bolts I will hunt with for sighting in
and practice? Or will some less expensive version give the same
result?

Thanks.

Welcome Sopchoppy from another in the "Volunteer" State. Flat nocks are the preferred for your bow, although moon nocks can be used with some attention to nock placement. As for your arrows, if you intend to hunt, than like any other weapon one would hunt with, best to practice with what your going to use in the woods or fields. Other than that, just have fun!

Good Luck

I believe some people here use the 1/2 moon nocks but I believe Ex-cal recomends the flat so that is what I use. as for the arrows.IMHO
always pratice with what you will hunt with, make no changes.consitantsy is key in any kind of archery,do it the same way everytime.
I number my arrows and track how they group,I have found bad arrows this way, ones that wouldnt group well, make sure you pratice allot with the same broadheads you will hunt with, not just the same weight, the same ones.Keep your gear clean and in good working order, check your bolts and make sure none are loose, check your strings, pay attention to brace height.
KEEP YOUR FINGERS OUT OF THE WAY OF THE STRING LEST YOU LOSE THEM.
Good thing about that is you only do it once.
Make sure there is a arrow loaded and well seated before you shoot.
Get into the habbit of cocking you bow and putting on the saftey.I could go on and on.
FELLAS?

One more thing, when you un-cock your crossbow after a day in the blind or stand, MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE THE BOLT WITH THAT SHARP BROADHEAD FROM THE BOW BEFORE YOU UN-COCK THE CROSSBOW!
Haven't had that experience and don't intend to!!

Welcome aboard
