CLOSE buck encounter

Post by Outdoorz »

Today I tried to slip into a cedar swamp I got permission to this summer. Never had a chance to scout it until yesterday. In 30 minutes I counted at least a 15 scrapes, with most being 3 to 4 feet across. Had to go in today. I ended up making a fair bit of noise... my climbing stand kept getting hooked on the cedar branches, the decoy I had with me made noise on the brush, etc. Was about 2:00.

I dropped my gear at the tree I decided to climb. Went back to a huge scrape 50 yards back the way I had come. Put the trail camera on a cedar and turned around...

Buck standing 12 yards away looking right at me!

2.5 yr. old all rutted up in the neck and body, maybe 120". He'd snuck up on me from the swale next to the cedars. I had the wind, he'd come in with the wind at his back. There he was and I was partially behind a 12" thick cedar. Obviously no hunting pressure and not much contact with humans. He wasn't nervous at all. Just stood there as my stomach sank wishing I'd brought the vortex with me to hang the trailcam. Eventually scared him a tiny bit as I stepped out (wheezed at me, I wheezed back) but he hung around out in the swale for 5 minutes and then faded away.

From now on, sneak in with a stool and hunt simple  I'll send pics when I smoke him

That's the idea! :D First time in is the best time in, lots of times. I've killed scores of deer sitting on a dove bucket!

Good story!

I had a sorta same type deal today... I climbed down from my stand since it was getting late(low shooting light). I saw a big body deer enter the same field about 120 yards out so I grunted just for fun and here he came. Keep in mind im standing about 10 yards from the wood edge in the open but its late so deer cant make you out. This buck comes straight to me within 20 yards and stops. He was atleast 20inches wide but a 6pt with small mainbeams. It was one heck of a rush to have him that close in the wide open and not know what I was. He finally gave up with me and walked away slowly. Its things like this that keep us going day after day.. its not about the kill, its about the excitment of being outdoors:) Everyday something different can and will happen

im sure the local dog hunters tomorrow will probably get that buck.. he's a good buck , but just not big enough for me
