TEAM FLORIDA SCORES

Post by saxman »

well folks, here he is,my first buck.
I got him Saturday 11/24
We had put the dogs out on a double track,I figured by the size it was a doe and Yearling, the dogs jumped abut a half hour later.Dad put me in perfect position and I had both deer in my sights but alas no horns so no shot, the dogs got by me and continued on to a large swamp,we had not hunted in there for a long tome so we put in some fresh dogs and let them go,After about two hours it seemed as if the whole thing had broken down when they jumped again on the other side of the swamp (how they get through that stuff I'll never know)Dad remembered a spot from days gone by so we went there,I thought he was crazy (like a fox) I said, DAD? we are going the wrong way!!I got that look that a father gives his son and out of respect I shut up.Well guess what? He put me out on a piled up group of pulp wood and told me which way to look,he moved on.I had not been there 10 minuets when I see him coming,I knew right away it was a nice buck for our area. Now understand that this spot was WAY away from where the action was, this buck was slippin out to avoid the dogs.I squatted down so as not to be seen and when he got to about 30 yards I rose up and shot.I hit him in the front shoulder and got both lungs and heart. The impact turned him 180% and he never took another step.I used my old Marlin 30/30
Needless to say I am very happy mostly because it was with my favorite hunter and friend,my father.
So to the tale of the tape.
He's an 8 point with a split brow tine so thats 9 points with a 13" inside spread. 20 points for the 9 and 10 points for the spread thats 30 more for Team Florida
Check me and make sure I'm right.
Thanks to all for the help.

Congrats Sax and family!!!
So glad to see your persistance pay off. Looks like your dad can teach you a few tricks still. I,'m in the same boat. I hope I can be half as good as my pops some day. Will you be getting him mounted?

Wonderful, Sax! :D

Good ol' Dad ... a good pack of beagles ... a good ol' Marlin thutty-thutty ... and a good southern swamp buck ... you just can't beat that with a stick, buddy! Good on you. Go on, Sax!

And remember my "relative trophy" theory ... you have to judge a deer's trophy status by the region you're hunting in. We can't hope to compare our bucks with those Midwestern hogs or Canadian bruisers. The scale should be graded by what a region can produce.

That buck is a fine buck! :D :D

Sax, unfortunatey Kenton has made the decision that your buck will only be scored as an 8 point. I guess to him the split brow tine is only scored as a single point. as a result he wacked 5 points off our team score. To me the buck is clearly a 9 point and I would be very proud of him!! I have asked Kenton to reconsider (a team from Florida needs all the help we can get) but for now we have to go with the program. I would hate these points costing Team Florida the "grand prize" for this contest. I guess I will have to get out my super duper custom deer call to bring in a "legal" nine point now
