My 2007 Boxing Day Buck (pic and video added)

Post by Partikle »

I arrived at my stand in the dark at about 6:20 this morning and hung out a scent wick with some Code Blue Buck urine I had left over from the fall of 2006. (Yes it was over a year old). The weather was clear with light winds and the temperature was right around freezing. At about 7:20 I heard some repeated snorting down wind and had to wait about 10 minutes as the deer approached from behind me before I could see who was making the noise. It was a large doe with a fawn and she waited under my stand and to my right for about 5 minutes. She then crossed the frozen beaver dam in front of me that crosses the middle of the swamp. During the next hour I saw another doe cross the dam and walk towards me and then another come from behind me on the right side again cross the dam in the other direction.

At about 8:20 I heard another snort from behind me on my left side and figured it was just another doe that had picked up the Code Blue scent. After about 5 minutes, from behind me and to the left I could see movement coming towards me from the corner of my eye. As I gingerly turned my head, I could see some very nice head gear with a small 4 point following behind and I knew right away I wanted to take this buck. They stopped behind me on the trail that I walked in on. For about 2 minutes they remained there and looked around before the big buck walked behind a pine tree on my left and then stopped behind some twigs and under the branches of the tree. He remained there for about 3 minutes, I was too afraid to move into shooting position because the 4 pointer was still behind me on the left and looking in my direction. Then the 4 pointer moved over beside the big buck and both of them looked away from me trying to figure out where the buck scent was coming from. I got into shooting position and waited for the big buck to move forward or back where there was a clear shot. After about 1 minute he took 3 steps forward and I released my arrow right behind his shoulder. He jumped about 3 times and then stopped, the 4 pointed jumped just once and stopped and looked around to see where the noise came from. The big lad reared up and changed direction but fell forward, I could hear his last breath leaving his body. He expired within view only about 50 feet away from my stand, the autopsy revealed that the arrow had gone right through his heart.

After 3 years of bow hunting and passing on many, many does, fawns and small bucks, he is my first buck with the bow. Including his two forked brow tines, he's got 12 points. (you can't see the forks because they are front to back)

Here is a short video of just after the "harvest" (correction: It was "Code Blue" not "Tinks" as I mention in the video)

Really nice buck! Awesome wall hanger of a picture. I hope you enter the picture in the Trophy Room for this year. Amazing how a great smile adds to the photo.

Beauty eh!

You guys are killing me. I sat out for 4 hours today and didn't see a thing. Time is running out and I have tags to fill.

Anyone in WMU 92 know where I can get a sure thing? :D

Sweeeeeeeeeeeet!!! For some reason, all the bucks around here have shed their antlers already. I know of 4 that have been taken in this area without any wood on their heads!
