Trail Camera Question

Post by Fishn-Hunter »

I have recently tried a couple different Digital trail cam's, one Moultry and a Bushnel. The moultry took 1 6volt battery and it would only last about 1 full day before the battery died. I tried a couple different top name brand batteries and it made no diff. So I took the camera back to the store thinking there is something wrong with it. I then tried a Bushnel with much the same results. My brother inlaw recieved a StealthCam digital for xmass that takes like 6 or 8 D cell, he got the same results with it also, the batteries only lasted about 20-24 hours. All 3 companies claim weeks of operation on a single set of batteries. Is this a string of bad luck or is this the norm for digital trail cams, if so that is pretty costly if you want to scout an area for a couple weeks. Not to mention pretty inconvienient to have to go in everyday to change batteries, also disturbing your hunting area everyday is not going to increase your chances of getting a deer. Anyone else having problems with battery life with there digitals? My StealthCam 35mm will go for weeks even in the coldest weather on 1 set of 8 AA batts.

They all suck in cold temperatures.

I went though the same with the moultrie,I wouldn't take another if it was free.Since I had a 100 bucks in it I put more cash into a rechargeable 6v lantern battery[$20.00] and a solar charger[$20.00 more] to use the set-up.Works for a 2 week period which is well for keeping track of the pics;but the camera has a sleep mode and is way too slow  All comes down too is to buy the best you can afford :?
Give it a try,What the heck!

If you get a moultrie you will benefit if you have something to keep the deer in front of the camera long enough to get their pic taken(feed/scent), otherwise you will get a lot of butts or a lot of scenery!! They are too slow for sure. I've been lucky and have had a couple good pics, so they are not worthless.

Another thing, if your camera has a red light, as does the moultrie, that flashes prior to taking a pic cover it up with some electrical tape. I'm sure it spooks some deer, at least the pics would seem to indicate that.
You can take the man out of the woods but you can't take the woods out of the man.

my wife just gave me for christmas a Bushnell TrailScout 5.0 :D and it takes 4 D-cell batteries, i read revious on the cabelas website and guys claim that will last 3-4 weeks, anyways just got it up and running today, going back next weekend to retrive the card, hopefully with some deer pics in it, and not just 400 pics of waving branches  , when i go back i'll let you guys know if the batteries are still good or what's the story.

My only experience is with 2 moultrie cameras that i have.
Both use 6 volt batteries.
Ive had problems with them in real cold weather but i mostly use them now from august to december and the batteries are fine.I use rechargeable batteries from forest city surplus in guelph.

I have my moultree 5.0 hooked up to a deep cycle 12 volt RV battery, no idea how long it will last. It will take up to a 4 gig SD card. The pictures are great and videos are Ok, a bit choppy. I have used a jump start style battery, it will last eight or nine days on a charge.
