Hunting Rabbits from a treestand?

Post by LondonDave »

Has anyone done this? I've had plenty of opportunities to shoot at rabbits while sitting up in the stand waiting for Deer but haven't take the shot for fear of scaring off any that might be coming in. Has anyone gone out to their stand after Deer season was over to shoot at rabbits? This would also work well for Squirrels but I wouldn't eat a Squirrel so I'm not going to shoot one, even though they are a nuisance.

If you're thinking of using your crossbow I would think you would have a hard time explaining to a C.O. why you're sitting in your tree stand with your crossbow when it's not deer season. If there are that many around just hunt them from the ground with a shotgun or even a .22.

There is no gun hunting allow in the one area because it's within the city limits. I had thought about the CO concern also but if you have a quiver full of judo points, you better not be hunting deer! :D

I just thought it would be fun to sit and watch them and try to pick them off while standing still rather than blasting them with a shotgun while on the run. We have another area where we do that.

Sounds like a fun thing to do, if it isn't to cold.
BTW, until you've tried well cooked squirrel (the large ones not the small pine squirrels) you really don't know what you're missing. My dad would eat anything (tripe!) but wouldn't eat squirrel because they were considered pets in Europe where we immigrated from. We talked mom into fixing the back legs and backs of large fox squirrel and told him it was cottontail when he inquired. He ate those "best ever cottontail" like there would be no more. He was pissed when we told him the truth...but ate squirrel from then on.

Rabbits from a tree stand

Londondave:
Squirrels --- They are very good eating so don't pass them up.
For field dressing go to Google and search for "skinning a squirrel".

Well maybe I'll have to give one a try. Maybe I can get my neighbour to try one first. Being a Newfie he'll eat just about anything! :D

There was certainly no shortage of squirrels coming to my baitpile.

I'll do the google search for the skinning technique.

Thanks,

Dave

Squirrels are very good done into jerky also , a few yrs ago i shot a few blackies and took the back and hind meat out and marinated it and made some really good jerky with my dehyderator, even friends at my work that would never think of eating squirrel said " mmmm thats good can i have another piece".

I'm pretty sure that you can't shoot red squirrells in Ontario unless you have a trappers licence as they are considered a fur-bearing animal. Only the blacks/greys are fair game during their open season, although I have been wrong before.
