2007 Buck Mount back!!

Post by Alaspan »

Hey gang,

Thought I would share some photos of my November buck from this past season with you. It's not hanging with a great background (have to get him to the cottage :!: - fast too!! I'm told... ). I had him done facing the opposite way as my 2006 buck, so when they're hanging beside each other, they will be 'looking' inward.

Here's the before....

And the after(s)....

Congrats Dave. That's a great looking mount. When did you take him? The reason I ask is that my mount was taken on Dec 26th and has a lot more hair in his ears and his coat looks heavier so I'm thinking yours was a lot earlier in the season. I see there is no snow on the ground yet but was that in October or November?

Partikle : Congrats Dave. That's a great looking mount. When did you take him?
I took him on November 9th, early in the afternoon.

And you're right, yours has a much heavier coat. It was still fairly warm then, but the rut was on. Not much hair in the ears - good observation, it's something I never noticed before. His coat and antlers are a bit darker than the photos show.

He was taken near my Cottage, on the Quebec side, about 80 kms Northwest of Ottawa. My buck last year was chocolate as well, but not this dark. Both deer were taken from the same watch, about 10 feet difference! There's some big swamps in the area, but I have no idea what makes the racks dark, and only a little further away, they're much lighter on other bucks?

I do not understand how you guys get your mounts back so soon. My Taxidermist told me it will be about a year before I get it back. You are lucky to get it back as soon as you did. That is a fine buck you got there.

Very nice indeed! I like the alert look.

Mine took 2 months, another buddy of mine went somewhere else and it also took 2 months. However, I know a guy that had to wait 13 months last year to get his mount back from a taxidermist in Quebec.

I think quality is the first priority, but if you get good references, call before bringing in your mount and ask how long the wait is. I've heard estimates that it takes a taxidermist from 8 to 15 hours labour for 1 mount and then 4 to 8 weeks drying time.
