Ohio allows 3 years of "apprentice" hunting, and I plan to start my son out that way. In my opinion new hunters, regardless of age, can benefit greatly by being in the presence of an experienced hunter so the "apprentice" program makes perfect sense.
If the new hunter enjoys the experience(s) and wants to continue hunting I'm sure the hunter education course will be much easier to understand and pass after actually experiencing a few hunts first-hand.
I'm glad to see more states are adopting the practice. It beats forcing perspective hunters to spend time & money taking and passing a course just to find out if they really even want to hunt.

Here in Ohio we have had the same Families Afield initiative for several years along with the apprentice hunting license so that young hunters can try hunting without going through the hunter's safety class.
