Frank, I wasn't doubting you. I was just wondering how light an arrow you have to use, or if there was something you weren't telling us.

In any case, it's a moot point since I'm quite happy with both my Exocet 175 and Exomag 200, while I was never a fan of the Vixen.

Hey

Post by BUCKSHOT »

If I had two crossbows to choose from I would be happy as are you!
Actually I am happy with my rig.
It is totally functional, my arrow weight is 337 gr laser II.
I actually converted an older style riser to be fit with a set of light limbs (black) riser painted black, homemade stirrup (black) and a set of heavy alluminum arrows to suit an old black Vixen rail for my son's upcoming b-day, a gift to him.
I kept the front end from my Vixen for a quick swap need I go for a hunt.
I gave him the scope and all, he just doesn't know it yet. I also painted the stock black. the stock is new and was tan but I thought I should make it suit. It certainly does.
I guess I am good to go for a crossbow hunt but I am seriously considering changing over to a Compound, time will tell.
Thanks for the challenge their Comfy!
I don't have any secrets Bud!

Wow only 337 gr. arrow, Ok now I see how you're getting your speed. However I'd cringe  at the thought of using such a light arrow. Personally, I feel even using the current 350 grain mininum is putting undue stress on the xbow components, and over time will lead to failure.

According to an old Excalibur catalogue I have, the minimum arrow weight listed for the 150 Vixen was 375 grains, while for the 185 Exomag & 165 Exocet it was 400 grains.
That was back in the day when the need for speed wasn't hyped up as much, and 300fps was considered the threshold.

Hey

The use of that arrow comes through carefull consideration and a lot of practice, along with the advice of a well experienced crossbow guy who is in the know.
I have never endured a problem and there is a 100 gr tip on it.

Frank, I'm sure your adviser is giving you sound advice. I also know that Vixens are bullet proof....well almost.
I've heard of a stock Vixen being dryfired over and over for testing purposes. It passed the test. Even so, there are exceptions, as other Vixens have been known to fail.

With your modified Vixen (i.e. similiar to a 165 Exocet) I feel that the possiblity of eventual failure is enhanced.

Frank, don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you what to do. Personally, I like to err on the side of safety, and would use a heavier arrow. That's only my opinion, and feel that way because I value my life.

Frank, can a kit be made to extend the limbs less than you've done in the picture? Is the extension made of steel or aluminum?

Hey Boo

I guess they can be made to a specific hieght no problem. These are made out of Nylatron which is a type of plastic. It is tough as heck and easy to machine.

BTW Hey Comfy, I appreciate your concern.
