What speeds are you guys getting out of your Phoenix guys and what is your arrow weight?

well you know my story Don i just put on a set of new limbs on my Exocet 175 which is very similar to the phoenix my bow was rated at 310fps and i get that no problem i have to set the string back behind the back line to get it down to 299fps my arrows weigh 383 grains gold tip w/ brass & 2" blazers. Any idea what your arrow weight those are globemountain?globemountain wrote:My Phoenix with FFF string shooting Excal/Firebolts with a 100gr. point averages 299.6 FPS measured through a chrony.
I have some heavier TenPoint elite arrows and they average 284.5 FPS through the chrony.

When my Phoenix was new I checked it with a fastflight string and 346 gr arrow. Averaged 304 fps. Then I went to heavier arrows (380 gr) and a dacron string and was much happier with the noise level. Today it's a Boo string with catwhiskers and a set of STS suppressors with no DBs. Still happy with the noise level, and I'm not about to check velocity and get thoughts of changing a thing.
I'm happy, it kills deer very successfully, so why worry about a few fps?
Sorry I can't give an answer to the velocity question, but I think all too many people are way too hung up on fps and seem to forget it's hunting ability that fills the tags.
Your string is one of the greatest modifications I have made to my Excalibur and it's apparently very close to the bare dacron string in velocity, as I had to make only a very slight sight adjustment when I put it on. I believe that change in POI was because of string diameter, not velocity. I would guess near 290 fps, but that's only a SWAG (scientific wild a** guess) based on other's results.

That is with a string that Comfy Bear made for me.Boo wrote:Digger, is that a factory FFF string?Digger wrote:My Pheonix was chronied at 284-287 fps with 18" Beman Ihunderbolts at 435 gr.

Don when comparing a Phoenix's speed one must take into account which Phoenix, since there are two models (i.e. the initial models only had 14" rails, not 14.5 like the current ones.)
The Tenpoint Pro Elite bolts/arrows are GoldTips Laser II with brass front inserts, and they weigh approx. 418 gr., when using a 100 gr. fieldpointglobemountain wrote:.... I have some heavier TenPoint elite arrows....

Arrow speed with phoenix bow
Just went out and tested two different arrows through my prochronograph.
The first was a 436 gr (125 grain field point) Easton power bolt with 2" blazer
vanes. It came in at 271 ft. per second.
The Second was a 363 gr Gold tip laser II with 125 grain tip and 2" blazer vanes. It registered a speed of 290 ft. per second.
I have an STS system on this bow and I am using my old excel string.
I have an excel string made by Don which I am saving for warmer times.

Durrrrn! LOL! I am experimenting with different strand counts and whisker combinations. Using a Db meter and try to evaluate speed, speed consistency, noise and shock. It appears that anything over 280 with my 430 gr arrows is respectable.ComfyBear wrote:Don when comparing a Phoenix's speed one must take into account which Phoenix, since there are two models (i.e. the initial models only had 14" rails, not 14.5 like the current ones.)

One thing that I've discovered is that my bow with the string material and the STS produces amazing consistency in speed. The other thing I learned is that I have more to learn on using the Db meter!

To decrease the angle on the riser?
I believe they did it when they switched to the new riser on the Vixen and went to supplying dacron strings with new bows. Seperates Vixen/Phoenix performance a little more, and gives better velocity with the dacron string.

NO, that's not why.bstout wrote:Why did Excalibur increase the draw length for Version II?ComfyBear wrote:since there are two models (i.e. the initial models only had 14" rails, not 14.5 like the current ones.)

I surmise that there are a number of reasons, but since I don't really don't know for sure I'll not mention them.
