DRUG PROBLEM
The other day, someone at a store in our town read that a Methamphetamine lab had been found in an old farmhouse and he asked me a rhetorical question, "Why didn't we have a drug problem when you and I were growing up?"
I replied I had a drug problem when I was young. I was drug to church on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals. I was drug to family reunions and community socials, no matter what the weather was.
I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did no speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn't put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me.
I was drug to the spam sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered a profanity. I was drug out to pull weeds in mom's garden and flower beds and pick bales out of dad's fields.
I was drug to the homes of family, friends and neighbors to help out some poor should who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or chop some firewood; and if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me back to the woodshed.
Those drugs are still in my veins and thy affect my behavior in everything I do, say and think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin, and if today's children had this kind of drug problem, this country of ours would be a better place.
God Bless the parents who drugged us back in those days!

At 17 I thought my Parents were stupid but at 30 i sure realized how smart they were. I have the same drug problem you have and just glad my parents had the time and energy to get me hooked. At 55 my Mom and wife are the two most important people in my life and i am darn proud to say it [my Father has passed he was a GREAT Man I miss him every day ]

I can honestly say that that post applies to my brothers and me. Church was mandatory, not optional. One of the worst things we could do besides lie, was to interrupt an adult, talk back or speak disrespectfully. We stood up when an older person entered the room. If an adult dropped something we were taught to race to pick it up for them. We held doors. We mowed lawns, shoveled snow, and cleaned houses for the elderly without pay. And yes, we had our mouths washed out with soap. Our parents spanked us when we deserved it, with whatever was handy - hands, belts, wooden spoons, and at school our teachers used the strap and rulers. There was no such thing as being bored - there was always plenty to do around the house. We didn't have much money and were expected to pay for our own schooling so each of us took jobs as soon as we were old enough to be hired. None of this hurt us one bit. We are a very close and loving family even though we've all grown up and moved on.
(Having said all of that, though it didn't hurt us in the long run, I wouldn't spank my child the way I was spanked and certainly wouldn't do the soap mouth wash! )
