For my birthday I decided to head up to a lake that is very special to our family. I spent the day with my mom, who ingrained in me the outdoors.

Just before getting to the cut off, we spotted a moose. I turned around and we started taking pics. I started getting closer when she pinned her ears back, angling towards me. Making me nervous.
Image

Fortunately she stopped, and I didn't have to see who could outrun who in the bog.

This beaver didn't like our presence near its lodge, and repeatedly slapped its tail trying to ward us off.
Image

We made it to the lake. There was still ice covering most of the lake so it seemed as though we would not be able to go for a paddle.
Image

On the walk to the canoe we have stashed.
Image

We stopped by my grandmothers "place". This is where we had spread her ashes. This lake means a lot to all of us.
Image

While walking around I told my mom that I would like to find either a moose shed or a deer shed for my b-day. Preferably a moose shed. But I would take a deer shed.
Image

The shed was found about ten yards from the canoe. I used to hunt this lake but it has recently become a provincial park where hunting is prohibited. I did get my first 8pt and my first bear, so I can't complain.
Image

We did find a little open water that allowed us to go for a short paddle to the opposite shoreline.
Image

This canoe has been around since 1979, and has spent most of those years hidden by the lake. It seemed to resent being used so it may have been it's last voyage.
Image

It was a great day. Saw many other critters that didn't allow for pics but made the day that much more memorable. An eagle, sandhill cranes, some deer, loons(calling as well), ducks, turkey.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
Awesome photos - what a great way to spend the day!

(Love the yellow duct tape - nice to know I'm not the only one who repairs canoes with it. )
