How close???

Post by chris4570 »

This morning I set out with the Exocet. I set up 100 yards from a roosting area. The gobblers were there, but I was competing with an aggressive hen. She positioned herself between me and the boys.

My back got a little cramped so I got up to sneek a peek in one of the fields.
Image

I noticed a deer trail skirting the edge of the field, leading right to where I was standing. Thinking about deer hunting for a moment, I followed the trail with my eyes and saw four deer on the other side of the field. They hooked up with the trail. So I got on my belly, with my camera between the slats on the fence.
Image

I wondered how close they might get before they noticed me.
Image

Closer.
Image

The lead doe continued to get closer. Not long before she would be at the fence where I was laying down.
Image

Last one before she just about steps over the fence.
Image

She just about jumped out of her skin, as did I, when she caught me moving the camera to try and pan and shoot. She bounded off a short distance. I gave a couple clucks(I could have been a turkey).
Image

They went back onto the trail but I was moving so they didn't come as close the second time around.
Image

They bounded away. I smiled and was glad that I got out of bed early this morning.

Cool shots. You gotta put yourself in harms way to get the great pictures :D . Looks like the group I was seeing there last fall. Good to see they wintered well.

Nice pictures! I bet that made your hair stand on end! :o

I've been within ten feet of a whitetail twice. They seem much larger when they get that close. That takes the saying 'had one right on top of me' to a new level.
