IMO when using a crossbow for bowfishing you should never tie the line from the reel to the arrow shaft directly, always use an AMS safety slide. If you look at the picture above you can see the line from the AMS Retriever tied to the safety slide next to the glove. When the arrow is loaded onto the crossbow deck the safety slide always stays to the front of the arrow shaft. As the arrow is shot out of the crossbow the safety slide moves to the rear of the arrow and hits the safety slide stop near the back end of the arrow. The line then starts to pull out of the reel.
If you tie the line directly to the shaft of the arrow you risk the string from the reel getting caught on the crossbow string or something else on the crossbow as the arrow is shot out of the crossbow. This can result in something called arrow snapback, where the arrow stops in mid flight and comes back to hurt the shooter, even putting an eye out.

Evan . . .one more question. Is there a weblink that explains the bolt set-up and how it works. The safety slide, how the string connects, the stopper on the arrow . . .I see all the peices, but, am not condifent on how they all work together. Is it as complicated as my mind wants to make it?
I'm guessing the safety glide is toward the front of the arrow before it's shot. The fishing line is attached to the broadhead. Do the arrows have to be made or someone selling them at different lengths?
Thanks,
Scott

There is a video call "Basics of Bowfishing" (I bought my copy on Ebay) where they go into the various setups in some detail. The line is tied to the safety slide which is free to move up and down the arrow from the point to the safety slide stop about 2" from the back end of the arrow. The slide stays up front near the point until you shoot the arrow, at which point the slide moves back and stops when it hits the safety slide stop. It's pretty simple.
Dear Evan:
another question:
looking your arm, arrow shaft looks bigger than 20'', what misure do you use?
