where do you practise crossbow shooting everyday?

Post by fantarain »

Where do you guys practise cb shooting during off season? back yard? archery range? forest/woods nearby? ..... I don't have a back yard, the nearest archery range is 20 miles away, and they only allow crossbow on broadhead ranges which are not many there.

I am totally new to it, I need your experience and suggestion on how to practise shooting.

What would the purpose be for? 3D? Hunting? Long range precision?

I only practice at the range - it's at least a 20 min. drive.

I guess for me, I will start with 20, 30, 40 yard target shooting practice if possible. The final goal is the comming archery season for sure

Bearing in mind two things. One is that there is no one type of practice method and that almost all of your practice can be done without any range. You're biggest part of shooting is target hold, trigger control and follow through. In theory you could practice those three at home at 5 yards. You could then go every weekend to whack some targets at the ranges you describe. Shoot longer ranges as well to have your errors magnified. Remember that the less arrows you shoot the better. Shoot every arrow like it was your last!
Just a suggestion, other views may vary.

I have a 50 yard range here at home, my bench is set up at 30 yards for rifle and archery, going to 50 isn't done too often unless I am fine tuning something. My wife and I built a target to keep the goodies out of the rain. My oldesest daughter thinks it is her personal stage though.
I shoot every day and am currently installing solar lighting to the unit for night time shooting.
I am 20 minutes from my range where there is indoor and outdoor as well as a very nice 3D. If anyone is ever in this area I will be happy to accommodate some shooting. :D

I can shoot twenty yards inside, or 0-500 yards outside, all here on my own place. Kinda nice.

I agree with Boo: You don't need much space to practice the critical shooting fundamentals. I used to shoot 10 yards inside the trailer we used to live in (no kids, no neighbors, exceedingly rural environment, with a safe backstop) ... used magazine pictures as targets. :D

Be inventive and use your imagination ... I'll bet you can find a place to shoot. Good luck!

I have a 13 yard max range in my garage I use to practice MY part in shooting (hold, breath control, and trigger squeeze). For hunting practice I like the natural environment of the outdoors in the areas I'll actually hunt. I'll rove and "stump shoot", but stumps aren't a good target with a crossbow unless you like to break arrows. A leaf laying on a soft earthen embankment is a much better target!

We have a 5 acre backyard and I shoot to 50 yards most of the time. I'd like to practice out further but I would like to build a backstop for the just in case shots!

My nearest neighbor is 400 yards away, but you never know what may happen with a ricochet.

The less arrows you intend to shoot the more careful you will be. So if you shoot 100 arrows in a practice session you are likely to be not so careful. Make a conscience decision to make every shot an important shot. Shoot every arrow like it's your last shot!
