I have toyed with several home built feeders over the years. Some have worked and others have not. Two feeder concepts that I have used are the bucket feeder and the PVC feeder. I have always liked the PVC feeder but found that it held very little feed and required constant refilling. The bucket feeder on the other hand held a good quantity of feed but I have not had much success with it. Well, this morning I started puttering in the garage with little intention of building a feeder and at some point between 3 trips to Home Depot and a couple of "pops" I came up with this. I combined the two feeder ideas and I set it out for a trial run this afternoon:
Not sure if it will work but Ill give it a few weeks and report back.

The corn itself by way of gravity. Once it reaches the spout it stops flowing. As the animal eats it releases more. I can control the amount by raising or lowering the spout. There is a little more on the ground than normal as I swept some away to make sure it was working.
Looks like it would work great. I think that around here the turkeys would clean that up before the deer had a chance. I just can't believe the number of turkeys I have seen this summer.

I hear ya Griz....I have had them run out of the woods before I could get my feeder filled. had a 6" pvc pipe buried in 3 feet of concrete and it lasted till noon.

I've gone back to a "spin" type feeder that only dispenses a few pounds of corn twice a day. Tried the old PVC gravity feeder this year and the day after I filled it all the corn would be scratched out. Not all eaten, just piled around the feeder. I think I caught the culprit this morning. There was still corn on the ground at the gravity feeder and I slipped up on it at about daylight. One of the fattest young raccoons I've ever seen was sitting in the pile of corn!
wabi i had a trail cam pic 3 or 4 years ago that had 4 racoons on the corn pile at one time. about 2 weeks ago i had a flock of black birds wipe out a pile in no time flat... if i had not seen them , i woulda never known what happened.

That's a nice thing with this trial as I have my trail cam set up on this feeder as well so I can at least see what is taking advantage of the "free meal"~!
I slowly ended a hungry racoon family a few years ago off a corn pile. Boy they love that corn! Nice feeder Sandman, too many deer here for that small of a corn holder. I'd be filling it every other day What a problem to have!
