O/T - Loaned my ATV (Having armchair second thoughts)

Post by Sandman »

Hey there,

Growing up on a the farm I was taught that if a neighbour/friend needed something you didnt hesitate and loaned it to them........

Well, a friend of mine asked if he could borrow my Polaris for a day to go riding with a couple of friends. I never hesitated and told him "by all means".

He returned it and I could tell by the look on his face that things did not go well. Not being the most mechanically inclined he told me that the bike was making some weird noise in the back wheels and not driving smoothly........... Here is the bike now;

Image

Tore it apart and now have to replace the rear bearings (which were destroyed) as well as the axle which is bent~! My friend has offered to pay for the repair but it is terrible timing just before the season opener.

The bike is old and I am telling myself that it can happen to anyone including me but it sure makes you wonder........

Oh well I would probably loan it again if asked.....Maybe not to that friend but to others~!

Frustrated,

I am the same way Sandman.
But there are some out there that do not appreciate what borrowing
equipment or machines entitles as far as responsibility goes. :(
They figure they can just pay for the damages and all is well, but that is not the case!!
I hope you get her back in order before the hunt begins.

John,

Your right I think I assume that others will treat borrowed property the same as I would~!

on the other hand...if the bearings were worn out, it could have happened to you on your first hunt. The axle may have already been bent causing the bearings to wear out

thats too bad hopefully all works out for you and you get it going before the opener. it sounds like it was abused a bit i think if the axle was bent before you would have noticed a rougher ride or a shutter at high speed. either way whats done is done no one can change that, hopefully he pays and you can get the parts in time

sorry to hear of your trouble.
It sounds like your friend wants to help with the damage and I would not deny him the oppertunity.

I know when I offer to pay for something I mean it
Let him help

Now I am a missersble old fart. No one gets on my atv unless I know where they are going and they are going to ride it like I do. They know if they wreck it they pay full cost of repairs at the dealer, not a fly by night " mechanic". This has cut requestd from a few to none. When we are hunting or cutting wood no one moves the atv without asking even if the keys are in it. If there is an accident I am responsable for it . It isn't worth it. Why lose a friend for being nice. Atv's can be rented from a few places on a controled course. I am sure those guys borrowing the atv's would not let you borrow their $8000.00 vehicle for to take a run down some gravel roads, so why should you loan them yours . I am just misserable but I havent lost friends over a damaged atv. Get them to leave their girl friend as security. Have a safe hunt to all. :)

I loaned my Sportsman that had only 300 km on it once. It came back with a bent front wheel, bent A frame, bent steering column, broken radiator, broken speedo, after only 15 minutes of riding. If the guy wouldn't have been in worse shape than the quad, I would have lost it on him. You should have seen the bruising on his torso. I was worried that he may have ruptured a spleen or something.
So after over $2000 in parts and labour, I no longer lend it to ANYONE.
I'm glad he wasn't hurt badly but I will never lend him anything again. Seems he thought he could ride it like you do on ATV Offroad Fury, but found out there is no reset button.

You should treat lending out your ATV like lending money to relatives . . .only loan it out if you don't care if it comes back.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.
Perception trumps intention.

I typically don't lend anything to anyone. You see, I'm cheap! The way I see it, is if it comes back busted, sure they'll pay but it will never be the same again if it's serious. In turn, I don't borrow anything, I rent it.

I don't take any chances with arguments, losing friends and/or money. Everyone I know understands this and don't ask.

To re-enforce this, I did lend my ATV to my 64 year old father in law last year. How bad could it be right? Everything he owns is destroyed by my brother in law. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Two flat tires and covered in mud head to toe, and a breather box with mud in it. Couldn't tell the color. He was suppose to go trapping with it. Where, under the swamp?

Never again!
