Run over by a deer

Post by Rudy »

I was given permission to hunt on a new piece of land a couple of weeks ago. So I decide yesterday to go and scout out the area. The woods must be over 100 acers and I wanted to walk through most of it to get a good sence of what the deer were up to. I'm about an hour in to it when I heard something running in the woods. First I thought that maybe I scared up a deer and it was running away from me. All of a sudden an 8 point buck was running right at me. I had just enough time to jump out of the way. It scared the s%$* out of me. The deer stopped 5 feet in front of me and then took a hard turn to the right. I think I scared the s%&* out of the deer as well.

Needed to share that!

I've had something like that happen to me a few times. You hear a deer running and turn to see it is running in your direction. Only after it runs up way close enough to figure out you are there do you realize that you are standing in a well used deer trail.

It must have been hair-raising to have a big buck that close!

Years ago I had that happen to me while I backed my wheelchair up in a fence line. I didnt have permission to hunt the other side so I watched only the side in front of me. About an hour into the hunt I heard something running through the woods. By the time I figured out that it was behind me and started to turn to look, a doe was clearing the fence right over my wheelchair (and my head). Screared the s%$^ out of me!!! Although it was an either sex hunt, I couldnt regain my composure enough to shoot.

:D :D LOL :D :D

I haven't had a deer run into me ... but I've had five of them run into the side of my truck on our dead-end road ... cost me $1400 to repair the dents!

I don't think deer see straight ahead nearly as well as we do.

On the other hand, their periphreal and rear vision is much better.

We're predators. They're prey.

Our eyes say so.

Reminds me of thre first year I hunted with a crossbow, in 2003. I had seen deer earlier in the day and was standing close to my usual spot trying to keep warm. I spotted this buck 50 yards to my left and watched him saunter away to the front and then head directly towards me. By this time I had the Exomag to my shoulder and watched him trot to within 5 yards in front, at which time there was nothing but brown in my scope. I fired in self defence, which scared the living #$%^ out of him and he almost ran me over. Missed me by a foot. Although he only went another 50 yards and fell. What the heck was that? Don't deer do the strangest things sometime.
