big one escapes

Post by crazyfarmer »

I got on stand at 5.45 this morning since I like giving the woods a hour to calm down. Well it starts to get light here at about 6:45 so guess what happens. I hear footsteps coming, pretty sure its a deer but I cant see a thing yet since its about 6:30. Anyhow, it keeps coming within 10 yards and stops. Next thing I notice is that I hear antlers rubbing a tree. Greatttttttttttttttttttttttttttt.... cant see a thing and a bucks right there.. how big is he is the only thought on my mind now. By the sound of the rubbing, he's got some mass! Well it starts getting just barely light enough where I can make out a outline. I try looking through the binos but its still a blur. He spends 10mins rubbing that tree and starts to walk off. Im getting mad now because I cant see his antlers or body good enough to size him up. Well I finally get somewhat of a glimpse of his rack heading away and he had to be atleast 22inches and a solid 8pt. Im pretty sure he was one of the solid 140 class deer ive seen in one field. Well, I set in stand for another few hours and get down to takea look at the tree he rubbed on. The tree was the size of a volleyball just ripped to peices... This helps back up my low light glimpse of how big he was!! I coulda shot and probably took him, but it was just to dark still and wasnt sure of the size. Had he came by 15mins later!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im going to a different spot today and give that one a rest since the winds gonna be wrong later today for it. He did everything right in following the funnel to within 10 yards. Just the sun was late  The woods is loaded with scrapes here.. i think I counted 20 on the 1/2th mile walk back to the truck.

he bypassed the rage bhead for another day atleast

That's exciting! Beat the heck out of my morning. :) Seen nothing here but the office walls. I got to get out.

Sorry to hear that, but it's all worth it no matter how you look at it. It's nice to know you're were close, gives you even more of a drive to be there when you can.( like you probably need any more reasons)I know I don't! Good luck and can't wait to see the pics. :D

I'll bet if he listened closely, he could have heard your heart beat! I get terrible buck fever so I can identify with the adrenalin rush. I actually missed a shot on opening day because I was shaking too badly. Good Luck!

Give the spot a couple days rest to be on the cautious side. If he is 22 inside he is four or older and will only tolerate one encounter. He still does not know you are there from the way he acted. He will hit the tree again!

I'd also give it a couple day, and a perfect wind before going back in. Still feels good to get close to a smart one!
