How long do you sit?

Post by cd14811 »

Just curious how long the rest of you sit on your stands? I usually aim for 2 to 2 ½ hours. Sometimes I wonder if I’m leaving to early in the mornings, or showing up to late in the evenings?

Thanks bstout. I’ve been thinking it’s time to push my limits again (not that long ago I could hardly sit still for 1 hour). On the way home this morning I saw a doe feeding in the middle of a field. Made me think I should have hung in there.

Depends on how comfortable I am!

I don't like to sit or stand for too long. I alternate.

One of the benefits of hunting your own farm is that it usually isn't necessary to go out and sit for really long periods just to kill meat deer.

All you have to do is open a window and ... just kidding! :D

Two and a half hours or so is good for me. I can go longer.

My personal goal this year was to make a all day stand once a week... This was before I revisted treestand A** This goal is looking nearly impossible two weeks into the season! At the very least I shoot for 4 hours of legal shooting light.

I have seen and killed and missed some nice bucks after 11am., sometimes i arrive a little later in order to wait till noon---that being said, if one is not confortable--it is hard to endure very long

I like to do mid-day hunts, too! Very effective.

At the beginning of the season I find that the hours go by more slowly and I'm ready to head home around 10 or 11 a.m. But it doesn't take long before I have to remind myself to head home so that hubby can enjoy the evening hunt (we take turns going out & staying home with our preschooler).

I try to stay out about 4 hours. As said earlier I do look at the solar calender and make changes based on that as well.

On Saturday I thought 9:30 10 AM after I had been on stand since 6 AM was good. Lowered my pack and bow and was about to get down from my climber. Just then 5 does and fawns came in. Waited till they passed at 25 yards then up came the bow and pack. Put a bolt in and stood on my pack as 3-5 more does and fawns came in. Had one doe come in at 5 yards - she is at the butchers right now.

My advice would be stay in the stand as long as comfortable and you are able. I often take the Good Book with me to pass some time when my confidence is getting low. It gives me something to think about, raises my spirits and renews my confidence.

Dress right, have the right stand and stay in the woods as long as possible.

Depends on the hunt itself but I try to be in stand at least 1 hour before legal shooting in the am and will sit 4-5 hours. In the evening I like to be in stand about 3 ish and out after legal shooting time.

Do not let the deer pattern you is something also to ponder?last year during the shotgun hunt we all left for lunch for our regular 2hrs except I went back early I parked the the truck and started the 1klm walk to the stands in the bush and looked up towards the bush as I walked through the winter wheat I saw no less than twenty deer walking from one bush to the other in the winter wheat lesson learned!!

time in stand early mid late

Post by deer jamie »

i find early in the season i am in my stand half hr before light ans stay ther 2-3 hrs pending weather. As the rut aproaches i try and stay aslong as i can and when full rut in swing you can sit there all day long and get action. This method alows me use my time wisley as i got a wife and kids that always miss me during deer season. I use the laws of avg. the longer u wait the better chance u have.
