Some things make you go HMMMMM....

Post by Sandman »

I was at an outdoor store a while back and had to chuckle to myself but after thinking about it it made me go "HMMMMMM..."

There was a fella infront of me who explained that he had just gotten a crossbow and was going deer hunting. He asked for "2 arrows for his crossbow". The staff member said you mean bolts and he said "No I have all the bolts for it....I need arrows and tips".

Once that was explained the staff member provided the bolts and some broadheads for the "2" bolts the staff member asked if he would like some target tips and the fella replyed "No I took two shots with it and Im good".

Im not passing judgement by any means but I sure hope things work out for him.....

Cheers,

I know a guy like that. He thinks that because he took 1 or 2 shots at 20yards, he is good to go at any distance. He looked at me like I was nuts when I tried to explain that an arrow will drop a few at crazy long distances. He thought it was just the same as his slug gun or rifle.

Sometimes luck is on your side and you don't need much experience... I remember my 1st deer, went out and bought a excalibur (wolverine) model some 20yrs ago out in Brampton... Sighted it in at the store that afternoon, from there drove up to Calendon East (15mins north) went to a field where I seen deer during a duck hunt.... sat on the ground with my back up against a tree, watching the field, maybe half hour later a big 10 pointer shows up and the rest is history...... I seem to remember thinking that deer hunting is so easy...Since then reality has set in and not to say I don't get deer every year, its just has not been as easy as that... So far I have been out a dozen times or so and had nothing within bow range yet..... Thats bow hunting I guess.... timeing is everything.... Oh by the way the lady (owner) of the bow shop could not beleive her eyes when I returned to her shop to show it off.... :D

That is one of the arguments Trad. Bow hunters have against crossbows.
This is why Excal shouldn't make them soo accurate :P
But the same guy will pick up that old shot gun and old slugs and head to the bush with out firing a single practice shot
Every year I sight in the gun and ammo I will use.

You would not believe the sheer numbers of people coming into archery shops this late in the season, buying crossbows and compounds, who expect to be out hunting next weekend.

We do our best to explain to beginners exactly what's involved in actually being prepared to be an ethical archery hunter, but a very, VERY large number of bowhunting "newbies" are out there in the woods with no clue.

I agree completely I'm new to crossbows but not to archery. When we were shooting the old Comando I found that trying to sight in at 30yards with the old Weaver scope. It would be dead on at 30 and hitting the top edge of the block target at 16yards and still high at closer ranges... Way toooo much math... :o So we sighted for 20 yds with that set up and I stuck with a 20 yard limit. You have to put in the time to know the equipments limits out of respect for the game animal. I'm glad I did... that would have sucked to shoot my buck in the back staps instead of the boiler room this year.

A coworker told me he was going to get a High Powered Riflescope for his ExoMax because most of the deer he sees are over 75 yards away!

I tried to explain bolt trajectory (and ethics) but he insisted on getting one. Hmmmm!

I agree that you just don't get "comfortable and confident" as stated above with your crossbow until you get a few seasons under your belt. Personally, I've never had any dealing with a bow until I got my crossbow and I must say that I love it. However, I don't feel nearly as confident with my crossbow as I do with with my muzzleloader or rifle :) The only reason why is because I've only killed 1 deer with my crossbow though. That's just my take on things!
