exomax question

Post by exokidd »

Im posting this for a friend...

My buddy shot a doe with his new exomax last weekend... he was shoting the excalibur carbon bolts with 100 gr. mech. excalibur broadheads...problem is when we retrieved the bolt from the deer the broadhead never opened. Also it seems when he shoots at 20 yards he is right on but when you shoot 30 yards and more the scope dosent spot on anymore...Any ideas??
May the scope be clear and the big racks in range!!

Does he have the varizone or lumizone scope? If he is then the speed ring setting needs to be adjusted to match the speed the bolt is travelling. Search for sighting in scope and you should find detailed instructions on how to dial it in properly. Hope this helps.

I believe its just a regular scope...not the lumizone. I shoot the exomag and love the spitfire mechanicals....I am wondering why excalibur would sell mechanicals with thier packages that are not recomended...these ones in particular seem very hard to open compared to the spitfires...

Sandman, I totally disagree. I have shot many different brands of mechanicals out of my Exomax without issue. I do like the simple lever type of broadhead better than the "spring loaded" or internal release types. Basically, anything I can put a rubberband on and shoot works very good.

exokidd . . .was the broadhead recovered or are you determining that the broadhead didn't open due to the entry/exit wounds? I'm just wondering if the blades never deployed or blades broke, or over deployed. Was there damage to the ferrule?

Anyway, I'd bet Peter would be interested in this. If you have the broadhead and/or wound pictures, that would help.

Robin . . .I totally agree with the confidence. No confidence = no shot.

I tested a ton of broadheads last year both fixed and mechanicals. Maybe if I had done my testing 5 years ago, then I'd have a different view. Which mechanicals gave you problems?

It's real easy to tell if a mechanical opens prematurely . . .it's WAY off target with the Exomax. The closest one I've ever had was 8 inches off.

Robin . . .weren't the Wasps using a rubberband or was it an O-ring? I have found that the rubberbands that come with the some of broadheads aren't too good of a quality. I started using the rubberbands that my kids were using on their dental braces. They work much better. I don't like the O-rings because wabi had a broadhead to not open(but, he killed the deer with a heart shot anyway, the show-off). He had used two O-rings, however, which could have been the problem. I also think the O-rings can become hard in cold weather, more so than a rubber band.

Lots of guys are using the Muzzy. I just got hooked on the wide cut broadheads. They have their issues too, but, premature opening isn't one of them.

The Cam Loc . . .is that the same technology as the Innerloc broadheads? I just couldn't get anyone at Innerloc to tell me How many shots those cam type releases were good for. They must wear out . . .which is fine, but, I would like to know if its good for 5 shots or 50 shots.

So far, I like the simple lever type of mechanical with a rubberband. Sure, they may lose a little energy opening up, but, the weapons we are using have energy to spare, eh?

It states on the spitfire package that sometimes when you recover the arrow the blades are closed.
Could be that they closed after the shot.

Sax, I'm guessing you are talking about wabi's shot . . .he recovered the arrow, O-rings and all . . .intact. Oddest thing I've ever seen . . .he sent me the broadhead.

I hear all the time about mechanical's not opening and the deer got away, and although I'm not terribly fussy about mechanical broadheads I'll post a bit in their defence.
First off, the blades on our Exacts take a few ounces of energy to begin deployment, and once deployment is started the 100 or so footpounds that a Max produces will guarantee that they open all the way. Physics won't allow them to drive through in an unopened state. If someone says that the blades didn't deploy upon entering his target or game, it must be made out of jello or something. Passing through the toughest organ on any animal, the skin, will grab the exposed edges of the blades and force them open.
Most of the time you hear about an animal that wasn't recovered and the blades didn't deploy the real culprit is that the shooter didn't put a good hit on it and needs an excuse. Personally, I always blame space aliens for stealing my deer when I can't follow the blood any longer, not the broadhead.
Regardless, when you pull the arrow out of the ground or target or critter, the blades, by the very same laws of physics, will invariably be closed by interaction with the material they are imbedded in. This gives the impression that they never were opened in the first place and adds to the confusion.
Like I said, I don't want to shoot mechs myself for personal reasons, but in the end they are the only way I could find to guarantee lang-range accuracy with a 100 grain head at very high velocity, so we sell them to fill this need. When you say something Excalibur sells doesn't work on our forum it affects our reputation and is generally wrong. If someone has a beef with our products the number here is 1 800 463 1817. Call us so we can shed some light on what's going on and help you if possible, don't go onto our forum and accuse us of selling garbage........Bill

First of all Mr. T...In all do respect, I am probably one of the biggest supporters of your excellent qulaility crossbows over the last 20 or so years i have been hunting with them, and continue to tell all my hunting buddies what a great product you have and the excellent customer service you provide...I continue to proclaim to everyone who is getting started in the sport to purchase an excalibur and help them get outfitted with one of the most user friendly and trouble free and ACCURATE bows on the market hands down...now that being said i apologise if this thread got off the rails and i would have never meant to accuse you of selling "garbage" as i know you would't...as you say " we are crossbow hunters who build crossbows". But i was merely wondering if that bow in particular, ( exomax) was too fast with that light of a mechanical broadhead ( 100grains) for it to open. I can appreciate what you are saying that if one was to simply pull the bolt back out it would cause the broadhead to close back up, but when i cut apart the entry area that was shot with the bolt, the broadhead was clearly in the closed position and never opened up upon entry or where it came to rest. Deer was recovered and dropped on the spot. Also when we continued shooting at 30 yards on the block target the scope was off after 30 yards....is this bow meant to be used with 150 gr. only? As thats the weight that comes with the right stuff package if im not mistaken. Once again i apologise if i used the wrong choice of words anywhere along the way.[/img]

exokidd . . .the broadhead would only have to back up less than two inches to be in a closed position after entry and sitting inside that deer. Based on what you just said,"dropped on the spot", it would be hard to believe the broadhead didn't open. Deer don't usually fall on the spot with a closed mechanical. If so, then I'm ready to buy some of those Exacts!

Seems like you just need a little more weight to get a pass through. The Exacts open, but, it's hard to see on the Block and when you pull it out, it's closed. They open. It is possible that you got a bad one. However, I'll bet if you call and talk to Peter, then he will walk you through this and you'll feel silly.

I plan to use the x-act broadheads soon for wild pigs. I shoot an equinox and have every confidence that they will get the job done. The only reason I was willing to shoot them was because Excal put the blessing on them.
