Im Back

Post by DropTine »

Well another moose hunt has come and gone, a week goes by all too fast! We had a great time, no tags this year so just calf hunting. The only bad part was my camera broke after the first day but I did get a pic of the first calf hanging. The first hunt of the week, mainly a scouting trip, Jeff, a hunter in our group, drops this big bull calf, it had a big body for a calf with just little nubs for antlers. Then after he shot it, two huge bulls made a b-line for him but he made it on a ridge where they couldn't get at him, the eventually ran off.. Then about mid-week we got hit with about 3" of snow. Yes, so I headed out on the bike in the blizzard with my dad in the nice heated Chev Silverado. I sat the first hour then my dad comes on the radio and said he is following fresh cow and calf tracks. So I shoot down to where we is and there they are, 80yds from me, the cow standing and the calf bedded down in thick poplars. I had a clear shot and it bedded but wanted to wait until it stood. Once it stands, the cow walks right infront of it. So im wating for the cow to move and then they both trot off and there about to walk in the shooting lane with the calf ahead but the cow was just a little to close so I decided to not shoot, better safe than sorry and possibly taking a down a cow with no tag. I was a little peeved but still a great encounter. I then set off into the great wilderness trying to track these animals and about an hour and a half of tracking and no visual of them, I decide to back off, even if I got a chance to shoot it, It would be in the middle of nowhere with absolutley no chance of getting a bike in there. Seen lots of bulls and cows throughout the week and a lot of partridge made it into our freezer. Then the last hunt of the week, Pete, another hunter in our group drops a smaller bull calf. So we ended up with two calfs for 9 hunters. Too bad I can't go next year though, college, can't take a week of that, or can I????

Sure you can go next year, Let me know and I'll pick you up on the way! :) You can always make time to go hunting. Just have to give up something to squeeze it in. Sounds like you shared a wonderful trip along with your dad. Thanks for sharing the pics. :)

Nice animal.

Where you going to college next year?

I am in my 3rd year, I have 3 days to hunt deer, I doubt much more than that this year, but it will all be worth it when I can get 2 weeks off in November.

Something went really wrong with the camera, the date changed then all hell broke loose, pictures went purple, then didnt take pics, then was flashing, then just turned off and wont turn on, even with fresh batteries. We were hunting in WMU 42, St. Charles.
