Wind direction?

Post by cd14811 »

When I get to my stand the wind is blowing the right way for me (away from were the deer should be coming). However that's when the wind starts to play games. First it starts to tug-a war (going from in my face to from my back), then it starts to swirl (from in my face, to from my right, then from behind, then from the left). Now to me this is very frustrating! How do the rest of you deal with this? What I have been doing is setting up so the wind is in my favour most of the time and pray that it doesn't change at the wrong time.

I play the wind very seriously. If it changes to where the deer should be coming from, I'm otta there. No sense in educating them even more.

cd,
I really feel your pain. You are not alone in this frustration. Where I hunt is very mountainous. The wind in the valleys and on the ridges can change directions constantly and may not match the prevailing wind. Hunting high from a stand helps, but the mountains sometimes offset the height advantage.

If you hunt from the ground, the best you can do is practice good scent control (good luck with that) and do what you have been doing. Set up so the wind is in your favor most of the time.

Went out around lunch to look at our stands... one was missing cause of wind damage. Our area is next to lake ontario so it gets a fair amount of wind... If shes howling, we don't even bother going out... Our spot holds the deer in harsh weather and we like to keep it that way

like cossack, no point educating the deer. that's just the way it goes sometimes.

here is something that might help you....

the perfect wind is one thats almost wrong for you and almost right for the deer;)

I have the same issues espically when the winds calm down. They drift up and down the bottom. But I cant bail at 6pm when its prime deer time and the winds shifted. I think the scent lok suits and sprays do help. But wind is also the key.. however, you cant always predict the wind

Like everyone is saying playing the wind is the key!! I know excatly what you mean about the wind playing games it happens all the time!! I usually just wait it out cause there is no sense in moving i believe you will spook more deer that way then if they get wind of you!! Smelling danger is one thing seeing it is alot different!!

i find those smoke sticks work great with wind direction and as a cover scent when on the ground...
May the scope be clear and the big racks in range!!
