The period of time between the shot and finding a deer is always a very anxious one for me, particularly on late afternoon hunts, so I was sure glad when this doe went down within sight. It might have had something to do with the quartering-away pass-thru

. We didn't even need to take out the flashlights!

Nice doe! couldn't agree more on the apprehension after I take a shot. It's every hunters worst fear that an animal isn't found.

My son hit a small buck recently. He knows he was high on the front shoulder. The deer bled alot initially and walked over 150 m. The blood trail thinned out and then it disappeared with no deer to be found. Does anyone know if a high shot across the top of the shoulders would tend to stop bleeding on its own? He feels terrible!

Nice doe ninepointer. I'm apprehensive on afternoon hunts for that reason as well. Had a bad run last year, and lost a couple of animals. Made a commitment to myself and the animals not to take shots that are even CLOSE to risky. So far I've had much better luck this year...the fact both animals were less than 15 yards away helped too! lol!

DanO: As for your situation, that little buck is dead. I lost one on a similar shot last year, found her about 400 yards away...six months after the fact. Doesn't help you feel any better, as losing an animal is always tough. But one thing it will do is make your boy more conscious to be sure of the shot next time. It's not to say we won't screw up any more (as I did twice last season), but it makes you think twice prior to snapping off the safety and letting that bolt fly. In hunting, we are always learning, no matter how old or experienced we think we are!

Its called Giant Tiger

(actually that's the name of the discount store chain here in Ontario where I bought it

) Its served me well and stood up to a lot of abuse over the last 3 years. 2-piece fleece, not bad for $35.
