birthday doe

Post by one shot scott »

I just set up a new stand in York on the weekend and was able to sit for an evening hunt. just before sunset the deer began swarming out of the woods, one by one, 10 in total!! 3 bucks and 7 does. they were dancing all around me, but I did not have one within 30 yards. 40, but not 30. not a comfortable shot for me. So I told my buddy who also hunts here from time to time about my experience and I advise him to sit the next day. Sure enough he gets a BIG doe @ 40 yard and she drops like a rock (spine shot?) he said it went out both shoulders. Unfortunatly I could not help him drag due to the fact the wife and I had a new addition to the family that night. It was a girl!! Good thing too, because i told her that if it was a boy I would insist that we call him Ruteger, named after the rut. Archer as a middle name? I cant do that to my little girl so we settled on something pretty tame. I asked for pictures of the fat girl(his, not mine) but he did not take any. It was his first archery deer in Canada in 4 years since moving here from Michigan where he had taken many deer. I think he finally broke his canadian curse!!

"I'm gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you'll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
Who loved his daughter more than I love you"

I play the guitar. Not great, but I manage to hack out a tune. At my daughters wedding I made my only public appearance since I was in a rock band for two years while in college. I played and sang Father & Daughter, the Paul Simon song with the quote above to my daughter at the reception.

A hunting daughter can be the greatest joy a father can have. At a time when many fathers found it difficult to communicate with their daughters, my daughter and I were having long conversations about life while scanning the horizon from a duck boat. We talked about school and boys while we walked the corn stubble in Kansas shooting ring necks. And we talked about her engagement while in a deer blind in Texas.

For a father that loves to hunt, the joys a daughter can add to the experience are beyond calculation. And in the course of all those hunts I determined something about my daughter. And Paul Simon was right.
