I ordered the kit from Vandykes Taxidermy supplies to do my son's skull last year. Came out real nice. You can do your own without having to buy the kit. For whitening, use 30% peroxide from a beauty supply store.

I did a couple last year after my neighbour told me the steps. If you do a search for "european mount" also western mount there are plenty of sites with instructions. Good luck and maybe you could show us the results when finished.

I did a european mount with my first buck. I removed all flesh possible and boiled it. took it out and removed more flesh, boiled it again, and did those two steps one more time. I found that anything left came off really easy, but i did use a pressure washer to remove all brain matter once i was finished boiling. If you dont get it all out it will STINK!!Be very careful around the nose as those parts are very fragil. I found that boiling three times made the skull very white, so much so that I did not have to use peroxide. Perhaps this was because it was a fairly young deer. I was expecting it to yellow but it never has so far and its been three years. If you do use peroxide go to a Hairdresser"s supply store to get the potent stuff. Your other choice could be Dermistide beetles. Stores do sell them but I hear they are high maitenance. Some taxidermists have beetles and will do it for you. In the latest issue of bowhunter magazine they have an article on doing your own mount, They even show you a picture of a shop that will dip the skull in camo for an amazingly nice affect. One more thing:if you boil, do it outside!!! Deer head soup smells as good as it sounds! I used a side burner on my BBQ with a steel pail. HAPPY COOKING!!!

I am doing my 7th one now using the boiling method but its not really boiling you need to keep the water just under a boil to keep your bone in its best shape. Then go to a hair care supply store and get a galoon of Volume 40 peroxide to whiten it afterwards. I will be glad to help you with any advice I can give you.
