It's noisy in the woods

Post by VixChix »

It's not just the wind that's making it noisy. Mid-morning I was treated to a chorus of bleat, whines, wheezes, and grunts on and off for about an hour. Something is going on, but I didn't hear a single twig snap. Sounds like they're holding tight in the wind, but wanting to get on with the rut. The cold weather seems to have brought us back to "real time". :D Am headed back for the afternoon to see if they've gotten restless enough to move.

I'm sorry Vix, that was me. I was in that stand just to the south of you.

I had the Burrito Supremo Dinner last night. I should have known better.

Vix...

I drove two out from a corner of a field that i usually enter... went and setup and heard nothing... as i was leaving, snaps and bounces were literally at the location where i drove the two earlier.

They seem to be sticking to the area for sure.

this is more for anyone to reply...

What do you do if red squirrels act defensive while your in the blind/chair? These buggers wouldn't leave me alone tonight, seen about 4-6 different ones and two were really po'd with my presence and hissed for a while which i fear may have alerted deer...

thoughts?

In my area (grey & fox squirrels) will frequently bark at moving deer, too. They often alert me to an incoming deer when I know they can't have "busted" me. I'm sure the deer are alert when one barks, but I don't think a barking squirrel would spook a deer. The 6-point I shot last week had come from the same trail where 2 squirrels had been barking a few minutes earlier.

I have found that here as well Wabi....When I hear a squirrel sounding off I turn my attention to that direction......

My answer would be to just leave be as I believe that the "sound off" is just part of the bush and I don’t think it would hinder your hunt~! Annoying yes but detrimental no.

Just my opinion from up here in the cheap seats~!

I use the chipmunks and squirrels as my early warning system too. Sometimes they tell me that people are approaching, other times it could be a wood pecker in their tree. It is hit and miss. One day I hope it is a big buck strolling into range. I find as long as I am still and quiet, they leave me alone.
Take it easy.

I am with the others, when squirrels make noise keep alert

I also find that if the crows or bluejays are sounding off is another good sign of something on the move near them.

Just my 2 cents worth.

No really, you're killing me. I thought perhaps a farmer was spreading, but I guess it was you!

Well, Honker, on Thursday morning my brother Eric demonstrated what we Hendersons do with pi**ed-off squirrels who act defensive while we're in the blind or chair:

We don't, we don't, we don't mess around ... hey! :D :D

That indeed is a savage boar squirrel that Grizz was so kind to post. It is best when confronted by boars like this to lie on your stomach and put your hands clasped together over the back of your neck and play dead until they go away.

I thought about replying and asking how many of us would fess up to putting a broadhead into a squirrel and pinning him to the side of a tree. We have little monuments all over our farm where Becker has pinned squirrels to trees. It gets really gruesome the following year when all the flesh is gone and the arrow is holding just a skeleton to the tree.

Becker might not kill a lot of whitetail bucks, but he is "lights out" with his exocet on tree rats.

I agree with y'all that it is a neat picture ... but please note (as I plainly stated in the original post) that the shot and the pic was my brother Eric's work.

He lives in southern Indiana. We don't have fox squirrels here where I live.

I'll tell Klem that you like his pic, though! :D
