Who is using a heater in the hunting blind in the cold?

Post by whitetailmad »

I build a plywood blind this year and have been seeing lots of deer from it. I want to get a heater for in it.

I would like to know how many of you have heaters and what type do you use and if you have had any problems with them. Do they spook deer?

Propane heaters work fine, no spooking.

I have. A small CAT. It's been a couple of years and it's a last resort for me. I find it warms only one part of my body at a time. :? I get up and still hunt when it gets unbearable.

I use a Coleman catalytic heater (actually have a couple of them with different output levels). They don't seem to bother the deer that walk past the blind, but I have had a Carolina Wren perch on the shooting port to warm up! (and the wren has been there several times in the past couple years - guess I have it trained now  )

Just spent a couple hours in my Ameristep Doghouse blind with my son this evening. It's below freezing so I lit the Coleman Black Cat (3000 BTU) heater when we got in. Had one buck walk by about 15 yards out, and a buck and doe at around 50 yards and none of them even looked at the blind!
We stayed comfortable, too! Not really warm inside with 2 windows open, but it took enough of the chill off to endure the hunt without numb toes or fingers!
BTW - the buck at 15 yards was safe, I've already tagged my one buck for this season. Wish the doe would have taken that route.

I wore my insulated bibs tonight with the 3000 BTU cat and all I needed was a compression fit top.
Nice and warm.it was 33 outside
Had to put my coat on for the walk back to the Jeep.

I have started carrying a thermos with hot water for tea.
That helps also.
