I think that by late summer, say the end of August, all the wild rice will be dark brown/black and fallen. It has longer and sharper glumes (covering)This stuff is too short and green for wild rice.
A lot of aquatic plants form overwintering buds on the ends of the stems. Tight little packets of leaf primordia and starch. ...
Naw. I had another look. It's gotta be some kind of Gramineae seed. Some of these look like wheat, but it should be be all brown by now too.
If there is winter wheat planted around there, that's what it probably is. Yup. That's my ID.
It's easy to tell what it's not, but hard to tell what it is.

Having been in the feed business for 15+ years, I don't believe this is wheat either. If it was wheat seeds, they would be sprouting. I think it is a weed seed from water edges or field edges. It could be wild oats as well as it is a very hardy seed and looks like wheat seeds and can be green and brown any time of year.
