Dinner = Pie are square

Post by wabi »

My wife made a great turkey pot pie (in a square baking dish) for dinner last night. I wasn't on here much after dinner, because I was so stuffed I fell asleep. A wonderful end to the wild turkey we had for Thanksgiving.
I decided since she's working this evening I'm going to show her what a pie should look like. Got this recipe online through a link in this month's division of wildlife newsletter and thought I'd try it tonight.

Picked up some fresh button & baby portabella mushrooms to use in it, and the rest we already have at home. And I'm using a round baking dish............Pie are not square - pie are round!

For those with dial-up connections:
Venison Cottage Cheese Pie -

1 9" unbaked pie crust
1 chopped onion
1 cup sliced mushrooms
1 lb. ground venison
1/4 tsp. pepper
2 Tbsp. flour
3 Tbsp. ketchup
2 eggs, beaten1
1 cup cottage cheese

Brown together onion, mushroom, and ground venison in a heavy skillet. Drain any excess fat. Add pepper, ketchup and flour to skillet and cook and stir for 3 minutes. Turn this meat mixture into the pie crust lined pan. Beat eggs and add cottage cheese. Pour this mixture over meat in the pie pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes, or until filling is set, crust is golden, and topping is puffed. 6-8 servings.

I'd try that tonight, Wabi ... but I don't have any cottage cheese!

We can't just "drop by" the grocery store, either. :(

Maybe next week. :D

Sounds good and simple.

You can about tell what will be good just by the ingredients, can't you? 8)

The spinach sounds like a good idea to try.
I stuck with the basic recipe for a first attempt.
Browned up some venison and added onion & mushrooms.........
Image

Cooked it up as the recipe called for and put it in the pie shell topped it with the egg & cottage cheese........

35 minutes @350F in the new convection toaster-oven.........

Then I made the mistake of calling out, "who's hungry!".........

Good to see my wife's new kitten has an appetite. The new kitten is part Maine Coon, so she just may be a lot bigger than old Zeke there in the picture with her. He only weighs 18 pounds!
And the pie was good! I had 2 large portions, my son had a small portion, and the kitten had a very small portion then some canned cat food for dessert! Zeke had a small taste of the pie and then his favorite dessert............ pimento stuffed green olives!

Looks and sounds good, Wabi! :D

I just pressure-cooked a batch of corned venison that I'd had in the brine for a week ... and then I made a mess of corned deer and cabbage with 'taters ... good stuff too!

At least I think so! 8)

What's the recipe for corned venison?????
We love corned beef in this house, so corned venison would probably be even better!
