Question about self climbers!!

Post by huntman »

I have always wanted to buy one and hunt with it. The problem is no one that i know owns one to give it a try. My concern is are they

really safe??
Can the teeth on the stand give out?
What if you cant come down?

These may sound like silly questions but I have no concept of how they work so I am totally lost. Any help would be great I really want to use one next season

when i bought mine i went 10ft up and started jumping to try and break it with no luck. they can likely hold at least double what they are rated for as theres always a safety factor.

id say they are safer than climbing up on screw in steps or a ladder...

I feel much safer in my Summit climber than the hang ons that I owned in the past. I use a Hunter Safety harness that attaches to a prossic knot around the tree. It goes up and down with me as I climb or decend. So I'm safely attached at all times. My weight around hunting season is 225. I have jumped up and down on my platform to see if I could damage it. Nothing, nadda. All is well.

Stands

Post by BryanOney »

The only tree stand accident I ever had was when a screw in step broke as I was climbing a tree to get in my stand and I fell. I never could quite get over that. I was always nervous climbing on screw in steps after that. Lock on stands being small always made me a bit nervous also. I feel very safe and comfortable in my Summit Goliath. Just never try to climb on a smooth barked tree or a tree covered with a glaze of ice. Climbers can slip a little on these surfaces. I do not think I will ever go back to screw in steps and lock on stands. I have been using my Summit for 5-6 years now.

I can't live without mine. I feel safe. It is comfy enough to sit all day in and it allows me to switch up spots and ambush deer without them patterning my stand.

I can't imagine not owning one! Do youself a favour, get one!

I have one from Dicks sporting goods.
Don't know what brand.
It is hard for me to use but with the thieve's out there I may have to use it again.
I have found some good shots with open fields that are getting tore up by deer (most likely at night) but it's close to where my Groundblind was stolen so I cant put my hang on in there,it wont last a night.

I find them to be safe but hard to use when you are not used to it.
I suggest pratice.Keep the bottom and top attatched to each other with a long strap in case your feet slip.
Not much worse that your platfor section sliding down the tree while you sit 20' up on the top part.
I do the same thing when climbing.
I wear a strap at all times or I hunt from the ground.

I have 2 from BuckShot.. I have the bow version and the rifle.. Both are light and easy to use and have held my 300 pounds with no problem.. I have even taken a few mid-day naps in the rifle and never had a problem of falling off/out,, really comfortable...(at times too comfortable)BUT I always wear the safety harness

we have used summit climbers for years, they are top notch.im 260 with out hunting clothes,so it has to be a good one.
always use the safty rope.

will hunting a fixed stand,i decided to remove it while hunting illinois.my bad arm gave out,and i fell,3-4 foot before my harness caught me.i ended up black and blue, and if i had the harness set right it would have helped even more.i do believe with out it i would have bkoke my back on the stump i was heading for.

I guess my biggest worry is that i dont use hang ons right now. I use only ladder stands and feel very secure. I just dont like the fact that i am restricted to those stands only. This late season I wanted to hunt another area of the property but the stand where frozen into the ground and the straps where also frozen. It just was too much of a pain to move in the -15C weather. Plus i think deer need time to adapt to a ladder.

Do you clear limbs as you climb up the tree with self climber?

huntman,

I have a climber that you can borrow and play around with along with the safety harness. It's up in the woods right now but will have it back soon. Call me and you can use it to see if you like it.
