Nock logic

Post by arakun »

New to xbows. Got a very good deal on a dozen 2219's, but with moon nocks. I'm changing them out for inserts because moons are not recommended and I'm not so hard-headed as to ignore the folks that made the bow. My logic tells me that though they may serve no purpose, if always correctly oriented, they would do no harm. I have been wrong about a few things, quite a few if you ask my wife, but would like an explanation of the science behind the no-no. Appreciate the enlightenment to be garnered thru this forum from all your experiences. I have felt very welcomed by the friendly atmosphere of the pages.

moon nocks

Post by hawg hunter »

I've shot more than a few moon nocks in my xbow. They worked well for me as long as the cock feather was oriented correctly. If bysome chance the moon nock is not orienated correctly you could have a dry fire and with some of the bows thats hard on the limbs and maybe you.

If correctly oriented all the time you will be fine. I had a few like that, a few minutes on the belt sander had them flat as recommended.

Both posts above are correct, however, there is another option, besides exchanging the nocks. You can grind them flat on a bench grinder. That's what I did. Or if you have an arrow cutoff saw, that will work too.

The logic behind flat nocks is that the half moon isn't needed and sooner or later you will probably mis-align one and have an accident.

i shoot a tracer on my compound and was just looking at the tracer for xbows. it is 1/2 moon. wouldn't that fit the string better (as my old xbow n bolts did) instead of a flat nock?
