I use a traditional wood shoe, cat gut base. I also use the same bindings as DaGriz, for good reason. They go on with one gloved hand in just a second over any boot, and stay soft and quiet.
We shoe almost everyday, and some of the drifts I am crossing this winter are 4+ feet deep, these keep me well above it.
I would like to try some of the military Magnesium ones when these give up, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. My son is with me for at least one of my two daily hunts, and he will need better ones soon, so maybe he will get them first.

military (old style) and MSR are the best two and both +/- 100$...
other brand are made of plastic and parts break easily, but that's my opinion :D

I have a few different styles of the old school gut string shoes, I like the looks of them and appreciate the work involved making them but simply put they work great, but I will look into those binding Griz mentioned, they look like a great idea.
I do have a pair of the newer yuppy ones that I borrow from work when the ground is icy because they have the teeth to bite into the ice, and after the ice storm we had this winter you need the teeth to safely get around the woods. The new bindings on my yuppy pair function nicely and I love the tensioner, but I doubt their longevity.

They are very cool as far as bindings go. DaGriz sent me mine many years ago.
Again, they go on with one hand in just a second, and come off by just stepping on the back of it with the other boot. Yet, they will NOT come off while in use. Silent, and stay soft and pliable in any temperature.
