Personally my dogs have scared off more criminals than my guns ever had. In fact I have never had to get out one of my guns to scare off a would be home invader. But about 10 years ago when we lived in Saskatoon (now one of Canada's most dangerous cities according to CBC Radio) my wife answered the door later in the evening to find a seedy character, scrambling to come up with a lie for coming to our door. He claimed he wanted to shovel our sidewalks, but had no shovel. Jen had two dogs by the collar barking and actually lunging at him the door. She said sure, but he never came back with the shovel.
That being said, now we only have a little dog, same size guns and crossbow. With all the gun storage regulations here in Canada, I might as well just chuck the dog the intruder and hope she distracts him long enough for me unleash some fire power. Or go buy another real dog.

Take it easy.
