open sights

Post by Vortex in SD »

In South Dakota we must use open sights. I went out for the first time today and had a blast and shot the X out of the target at 20 Yards :D

My question is are ther many of you who use the optic sight that Excal has??

I was told that the top one is 15 yards but I used it at 20 and worked great but should've I use the optic at 20 or 30 yards??

Thank you for all your imput and welcome to the forum before I went out today :) :)

Thanks,
Dean

I'm sure results will vary w/ bow speed and arrow weight, but I've found if you sight the pin at 20, the black post under it is good at 30.

Others use the pin at 25 and the post at whatever, but since 30 is my limit I haven't made note of their choices.

I'm equally sure others here do it totally different, lol, maybe they will chime in w/ their secrets.

I shoot my Vixen with the factory "open sights' out to 27 yards. I can consistently hit a 3 inch circle.

This is my comfort zone, and I am fine with that!

Welcome to the forum! :D

I can and sometimes do use open sights, but my mid-forties eyes have taken care of the question "Which is best for me?" ... scopes allow anyone to shoot with more precision, especially those with weak or aging eyes.

I use open sights, Exocet 175# with factory bolts it was 315fps

The center pin was for 20y. The upper 10y & lower 30y.

This was in my maual but different speed bows with differebt bolts weights will effect the upper and lower distance increments.

Last year I had my center pin set at 25 yards and shot highter or lower on target to compensate the distance.

Open sights work great

I used to shoot my Vixen a lot with the open sight before I saved up enough to get the Vari Zone scope this fall.

I found that I was VERY (scary) accurate within 20 yards. I zeroed the open sight to shoot dead on at 20.

I tried it at ALL distances - from 15 to 50 yards.
At 15 I would shoot and aim about an inch low and it was dead on. At 20 and 25 I would shoot dead center, and at 30 I would shoot in between the bottom spike and the center dot, at 35 I would aim with the bottom spike touching my desired point of impact and so on.

I shot 100g Thunderheads with carbon express arrows and a standard dacron string. You will have to see how it shoots with the type of string and arrow weights you have. The open sight is quite good, but after you get out around 30 yards, your target center becomes more and more obscured. Most here shoot under 30 yds at their deer, as do I.
