Sean's First Turkey!
Son’s First Turkey:
WOW! What a morning! Today is the first day of turkey season for youth in Virginia.
I have taken Sean, my younger son, turkey hunting since he was nine years old. He could never harvest one even though I called them in to where the blind would shake when they gobbled.
This morning was different. I quess he is more grown up now that is almost 15. We set up a blind that I always hunt. It is on the edge of a field, next to some woods with pines. Just after daybreak, hens where everywhere. The sound of Gobblers could be heard off in the distance But then the sound of a mature Gobbler pierced my ears. He was on top of the hill, at least three quarters of a mile away. I hit the call ( Big John’s Turkey Calls) . The call is the first one I bought for him ( Maple, Honduras Mahogany and Box Elder), http://www.bigjohnsturkeycalls.com/Contact.htm the best sounding box call I ever heard and I own many, probably more than Big John himself.. Tom answered with every stroke of the call. But he was so far off, will he come to the Pretty Boy, Pretty Girl decoy?
We waited what seemed like forever. Back and forth we would walk along the path at the top of the hill. He would emit his call every time I stroked the call. But would he walk down that hill? I had never had a turkey come that far from that spot though it seems every season a tom hang up there.
He didn’t walk down the path, he flew or sailed! But he went over the hill out of range, teasing up like girls from my past.
I guess the turkey was more like me than I care to admit. Finally, he came running in to the decoys. He couldn’t resist the temptation of the Pretty Girl.
Sean finally got his first turkey., 22 pounds 6 ounces. This morning we made a memory! I’m 61 and he is 14. (Don’t ask! I sent his older brother to camp when he was 10.) We call Sean's the 4-H baby.
I hope Sean will continue to hunt and take his children hunting even though due to my age, I probably won’t be here to see his children.
Take a Kid hunting!
P. S. I don’t post much, but I am on the forum every day reading and learning.
Boo, Saxman, Ray, and Maple, you should PM me if you want to hunt with me in Virginia. I have a thousand of land to hunt and you are welcome any time. Can’t provide housing, but game is here.

Congrats on Sean's turkey, Kyteach!
Sounds like it was a great hunt and a nice bird!
So you're from Southwest Virginia?
I have some very good friends up in Burke's Garden ... and many in the Clear Fork community along Highway 61, too. I get up there pretty regularly.
Where are you in relation to Tazewell? Grundy?
Thanks for the story!

The beard was 10 iches. He's turkey hunted since he was 9, but would get so nervous when one could come in that he would miss the shot. He has taken several deer with no problem. Sean's turkey beat my older son's by a little, but he didn't rub it in. The competiton between them is less now that my older son has a child of his own.
