Great morning and lots of action but took a pass

Post by Sandman »

I had decided not to hunt today and get into work so I could get caught up. I forgot to reset my alarm clock so when it went off at 3:45 am I thought I would give it a shot and head out. I arrived at the property and set up in a new location with my big Tom and hen decoy. At day break all was quiet. I called several times with no luck. The hen that visited me on Tuesday appeared in the far field and went on about her business feeding .. As she fed about 500 yards away I heard a cluck from behind me. About a minute later a new hen appeared and tried desperately to get my decoys attention:

She stayed in the field and approx 5 minutes later over the knoll appeared two Jakes. Im not sure if the Jakes were nervous because something was not right or because of the size of my decoy:

The Jakes slowly came in to approx 30 yards. I decided that I didnt want my hunt to end and let them pass. I wanted to get more pictures but with 3 sets of eyes on me I was afraid to breath. The Jakes eventually headed off and I caught one last glimpse of them before they headed into the bush:

As I was packing up from the morning hunt I didnt notice the hen that was just over the rise and spooked her:

All and all it was a great morning but I hope I have not jinxed myself.

Awsome shots ! ... I love the jake peekin over the hill shot !

As many have said before me ... the hunt isn't always about killing something !

Work or hunt????! Is there any question?

Looks like you made a good choice! Always nice to just be out there, isn't it?

Nice pics.

As far as I'm concerned, a genuine close-up pic of a game animal in bow range is as good as a kill. :D

Better, sometimes. 8)

How do you get the decoys to work for you , I have used decoys and soon as the hens spot it they bust loose taking everything with them.
