big ol'tom 1 me 0

Post by Fork Horn »

Got out early this morning with my brother. We set up together and I called for him. Tom started to sound off from the tree around 5:30. He flew down and went quiet. I did my best fly down and assembly call. No answer right away. I new he would be coming from behind me. After a ten or so minutes I hit the box call and he GOBBLES   right behind us on top of the hill. I cluck and purr and he just keeps cutting me off over and over. Then I see a head come over the hill just 30yrds away. I realize it is a hen. She comes down into my decoys and starts "strutting" clucking and purring. He comes around the hill to the far side of the field and hangs up about 75 yards away. He just stayed out and away from my decoys and continued to gobble and strut till 9:00am. He never came closer than that. Finally he went back the way he came and we crawled around the hill and cut him off. We got to 43yrds ( I paced it off after) and then he stopped long enough for my bro to take a shot. Unfortunatly he missed. I think that because we were in the Prone position he over estimated the yardage and aimed way to high.

He had two hens with him the whole time. the hens would come into our decoys and then walk back towards him. They all moved across the field and back but he just wouldn't come closer.

Made for a interesting hunt

P.S. I took a video of him coming around the hill if any knows how to post it.

Every time you kill a coyote an angel gets a set of wings. OK, I made that up. But it should be the case.

How is your buddy's spine after that prone shot and heavy loads. I needed a massage yesterday, after a similar shot like that. Fortunatly all is well today.
