Tracks

Post by TPM »

There's a place we hunt that we call the "401" (also the name a major highway for those who don't know this area). Raccoon, deer and turkey tracks all on the same path.

We're getting a little tired of gnawing on those dekes for sure!

I haven't seen birds on that farm for many years - was nice just to see tracks this season! It's been bad for coyotes there lately which might explain the lack of turkeys. I'm going to do my best to save one from getting eaten by the brush dogs.

Grizz's Chicken-Fried DECOY With Onion Gravy (In 25 Easy Steps)

No kidding. This is for real.

1. Get ya a decoy ... any variety will do. I prefer Feather Flex.
2. Wash it
3. Cut it up in six equal pieces
4. Soak pieces in salt water overnight ('bout as salty as tater water)
5. Melt enough lard or bacon grease to get about 1/2" in your iron skillet
6. Beat together 2 eggs and a cup of milk
7. Mix 2 cups of flour with salt, red and black pepper to taste (yes, taste it!)
8. Pat your decoy pieces dry and dip 'em into the egg and milk mixture
9. Dredge the pieces in the flour mixture
10: Repeat steps 8 & 9
11. Make sure your grease is hot enough to fry (test with a pinch of flour)
12. Place pieces in hot grease & fry, turning when needed, until golden brown
13. Remove and drain on paper towels
14. Prepare a pressure cooker
15. Put in 1 cup of water or chicken broth, 1 large sliced onion, 1 tablespoon of frying grease
16. Arrange decoy pieces in pressure cooker
17. Put lid on, making sure it seals, & heat to exhaust air
18. Once air is exhausted, place weight on & heat to jiggling
19. After jiggle, cook for 10 minutes & remove immediately
20. Remove pieces, place in serving dish
21. In skillet, brown 1/2 cup sifted flour in an equal amount of bacon grease
22. When flour is browned and thickened, add two cups of milk and the onions, brown "goody" and liquid from pressure cooker, stirring briskly.
23. Add salt, black and red pepper to taste
24. Pour gravy over decoy pieces
25. Serve with fried or mashed potatoes and biscuits

Enjoy! :D

That made me hungry. Can you use a duck decoy instead hard to find turkey ones here.

I wouldn't know why not. One decoy tastes as good as the next, usually. :D
