O/T Trashy in Toronto?

Bob, those public service workers have it good, especially the waste management folks. They get 10 hours pay per day for generally 4 to 5 hours of work. Good thing the general public is unware of that fact. Unfortunately they are not happy, that the city is trying to switch their "banked sick time", which generally would amount to more than one year full pay, by the time they retire, with a sick benefit plan which they would only get paid if and when they are actually sick.
Go figure, God forbid, actually getting paid sick time only if you're sick. That's totally unacceptable to them, when they've always be used to feeding out of the public trough.
That's what happens when one elects a socialist government, with no backbone.
What should be done is to fire the lot of them, just like Ronald Reagan did with the Air Travel Controllers. Then the jobs could be contracted out to private industry. By doing so, they could reduce their budget by 50%. Unfortunately they won't/can't do that, because then how could they get any kickbacks and favours.
Oh well, what else is new. That's the way the cookie cumbles. As taxpayers we're used to getting screwed over. We just have to grin and bare it, while we bend over even further.

The main bone of contention is that the employees get a large number of sick days that they can bank until they retire. Most of us in North America only dream about sick days let alone banking them! Our jack-ass mayor gave other city employees raises and their sick days (banking included) and then wanted to take the sick day banking away from the most militant group of city employees! What a freaking moron! I hope the garbagemen get classed as essential services and get legislated back! Farg them and the horse they rode in on! I hope our dear mayor gets reincarnated as a groundhog in Virginia!

Aren't garbage strikes in Toronto a yearly thing? Seems they are always on strike for some reason or another.

Most of the forum readers have never been to Windsor, Ontario. We are in week 12 of a city strike without any garbage pick-up or parkland maintenance.
Guess what? We are all making the best of it. The union is voting today. Watch and wait. It's a new world out there for all unions, but some Windsor union members "just don't get it".

just my 2 cents worth i have no idea who is right or wrong .
as far as sick days maybe some of these garbage workers are exposed to all the $*(% and filth toronto has to offer just think of what they are asked to work in every day does not matter if its hot and covered in maggots or snowning and froze to the curb or pouring down rain they are asked to work in these conditions every day that may be why they are allowed sick days .i know some would take advatage of that but for the guy who shows up every day sick or not should he not be allowed to bank those days .also to turn the thing over to a contractor or the lowest bid may not be the in the best interest of the tax payers .i think ABC garbage disposal just like everyone eles is going to look for the easy way out or THE BOTTOM LINE profit thats what its all about and you are not going to get any more than you pay for .just my 2 cents

I haven't been seeing any of this on the news. That's all we see is Obama.
Yes, it sounds like your garbage pick up guys have a nasty job, but I'd do a nasty 4 to 5 hour job for 10 hours pay. Contracting this out is what should be done. It's called free enterprise. I don't know how you all feel about your govt. but ours seem to turn everything that they touch into a money pit.
It's a hard economy out there. Look at what greed did for the union auto makers over here. They always wanted more. They refused to do the things that would make them competitive with japan.
Yes, Reagan would have whipped them into shape. Now there was a leader!

Munch, as a mechanic we are exposed to a whole whack of carcinogens every day. We have to work on cars wet or dry, iced, salty slush dripping on our heads, cutting knuckles, work around and use dangerous equipment like mig welders and gas welders, drive potentially unsafe cars etc, etc, etc. Do we go on strike? Do we get a pension? Do we get sick day? We have to be schooled and qualified. We have to buy tens of thousands of dollars worth of tools. We have to diagnose electrical and other complex problems. We are exposed to litigation. The list goes on and on. We should go on strike and see how long it takes before the city comes to a stop and go back to work until we get bankable sick days, pensions, job security, health benefits etc. Or we could just extort money some other way. Striking is a form of extortion period! The more any strike goes on the less sympathy I have for the strikers and the more I have for the employers. May one thousand fleas infest every single striker out there. Those spoiled, immature, under worked, self centered, lazy, self centered sanitation engineers should you know what! Since when does an employee dictate to the employer what he does or does not do? Wabi, when we get finished with the public plumbers are next, Wheelie, no heat or ac!
