Not enough, would like to scout but there have been over 60 cases of Rocky Mtn Spotted fever in TN already.

The Boys Are Back In Town!

Remember that song by Thin Lizzy? Well in a way, around here in the bean fields of southwest Ohio the boys are indeed back in town.

The bachelor groups are really starting to hit the bean fields every evening here around the house. We are sitting in our lounge chairs in the bed of the pick up truck enjoying a few adult beverages while we glass them. This is just the most enjoyable way to scout for bucks, and strange as it may seem, one of the most effective as well. It really gives you an idea of what you have in your area and is a great means to determine what possible areas you might want to concentrate on during the first few days the season opens. It is one of the three times during the entire season that mature bucks are vulnerable. It is possible to catch a mature whitetail buck on a food pattern if his pattern has not been disturbed. So scouting at a distance is the key.

We keep a record of the times they enter the field and make a notation on the overhead photo of the field exactly where they are entering. We acquire these overhead photos at the county auditor's web site. You could do the same or use Google earth or any number of satellite overheads available from different agencies.

This type of scouting requires a really good set of optics, a comfortable chair and a quality cooler capable of keeping beer really cold. Oh, and one last thing. Check your local laws regarding open container laws. I am told that some laws consider drinking in the bed of a pickup truck the same as drinking in the cab.

So get out there and have a nice evening glassing a bean field. And when you see a quality shooter, twist a cap and think kindly of me while you enjoy a cold one.

Yes, 65 cases and two deaths

I enjoy family, grilling, cold beer, and gardening in the summer. I can't have a cold one at my farm and watch deer because it's 35 miles from where I live. Someday!
